O.K., here's my deal. I recently got a new house in the booney-boos.
Have crap for phone lines here in the sticks and no cable available.
I do on the other hand Have all the hardware, router, dish, etc. for a Direcway satellite connection.
Does anyone else here use this service?
Is it worth the 60 bucks a month, that also gets me satellite tv programming.
It is supposed to be pretty fast for the internet, but would still like to hear from any of you that acually use this service.

also I see that frys does a 9.99 dialup service, how is it? Because if I have to keep my dialup, then I want to go cheaper...
thanks in advance

If dialup is your only alternative, I would say it is worth it.

It's your call though. AFAIK, a satellite connection can be fast, but the latency is high(bad for online games). That may or may not matter to you.

Do you get cell phone service where you are? You might be able to get a 128k connection through that type of service for cheaper per month.

Can't give you too much info b/c I don't have it myself but....

For the most useful information:

www.broadbandreports.com is a good resource

I suppose if it all you have available is sat. internet, it will have to do

If you don't know already, gaming on a sat. connection is almost impossible

well since I am lucky to get a 36.6 connection on my dialup account, that is why I am asking.
not to many choices here at the momment. but I do have a few grand worth of the equiptment for this place, so I am looking to go with them to start, since I will have no installation or equipment fees.
Bad for online games though... well I guess it couldn't be any worse than a 36.6 dialup connection for my games...lol

Actually, it can... lol

I don't know how things have changed recently, or if it still holds true or what, but I've heard that pings of around 500 are pretty normal for a sat. connection. A good dialup connection can pull ~150 - 250.

I don't know how much it can vary or anything though.

As far as internet speed/downloading,.. it would kill dialup. If you need teh broadband, I'd say it would be worth it, especially since you say you wouldn't need to pay any setup/equipment fees.

Wait, I thought the satellite internet alone was $60 a month?

:(
lol

I just didn't understand what you meant. Are there usually additional fees or something with sat. internet or something?

Ahh. That's pretty cool, then. If you're going to get satellite TV in addition to the internet, I'd definately go for it.

do you still need to use a dialup connection to upload, or have they developed 2 way satellite internet now?

Ouch.

I totally forgot about the dialup upload, too.

I dunno, it's looking less attractive. Do you get cell service? 128k up and down would be better than dialup..

I used to sell this service so I know a thing or two.

Expect lots of lags. But once the information starts flowing in, it is fast in downloading sense. But the lag can be pretty bad, even worse than dial-ups.

When the sky gets cloudy, you may experience more slow downs.

It is good for is emails and surfing the web. Streaming is not recommended for satellite users.

Oh satellites do have strict cap per month. Once you exceed it, they will cut your speed by half the rest of the month.

EDIT: Now all satellites are 2 way, but it's dependent on what hardware you have. You said you already have the equipment, how old is it? Is it the newer model?

Was it really that bad?

It would suck if it was so laggy that it was only a little faster than dialup overall.
