Any of you use a home theater as PC speakers ?

Rather than spending $250 on some z680s or something similar, I thought maybe a home theater for my PC would be better.

I live near a frys and they always run cheap recievers and speakers (they have a sherwood 5x100 reciever for $100 LINK) and they often run speaker/sub packages for $100-150 so I think I could do this for a reasonable price.

Anyone know any reason why I shouldnt do this ? Yea, it wouldnt be top of the line components but I have a feeling it would be better than z680s, and Id feel like I was getting more for my money.

BTW I have been using my real home theater (onkyo/jbl nsp1) for playing Far Cry and the sound is unreal.

Z680s are great. They will beat anything (basically, except for the nicest Klipsch and stuff) up untill the $50 per speaker market, that my home theater subscribes to. 🙂

Ive got 5 massive at least waist high speakers (except for front center)

I've done it but for the money your better off just getting whatever Logitech 5.1 setup you can afford. now if you were getting some real HT stuff it would blow away computer speakers but nothing you get at fry's for under $300 will be better than a setup of higheend logitech or klipch computer speakers

Hooked up with:

NAD T750 Reciever
2xDali 808 Fronts (2x8" 1x5" 1x1")
2xDali 104 Rear (2x6,5" 1x1")
1xDali C1000 center(2x5" 1x1")

I also have a 12" Cerwin Vega Sub, I don't use because I've moved into an appartment.

I haven't had any actual PC Speakers since 1998.

Still using the Pioneer ProLogic system that I bought back then for mucho $$$
I will probably get a DTS receiver eventually but I would now never again buy a set of dedicated PC speakers, IMO the bass is completely overexaggerated on most of the systems I listened to. I prefer to also have some mid and hi-range that isn't drowned out by the whump whump of the sub-woofer.

I'm quite happy with it, now I just need a large room/appartment instead of these 20m^2 🙂

Hehe... same reason I haven't gotten a DTS receiver yet. No space for all the speakers 🙁 For stereo output the old ProLogic receiver does just fine... I actually only used it once in surround mode after spending all that money on it so long ago. Oh well, I'm moving soon to a larger apt. and x-mas is such a nice time to go and buy some DTS equiptment 😀

I bought it when I still lived at home and had a larger room. I don't have a TV so the only thing I can hook it up to is my computer. It's only prologic with 5.1-in, but 90% it's just used for music, with my NAD 524 CD-player. I bought it because it's the one with best stereo sound recievers in my price range, and the 5.1 is just for gaming and an occaisionally DVD.

Dali, nice choice. 🙂 Their Helicon & Euphonia rock. Haven't had a chance to hear their Megaline though. 🙁
