In all of Oregon, I think the Willamette Valley is prettiest, but up around Bend is nice too and there is good skiing up that'a way as well if your into that.

NOT! The Umpqua Valley and Douglas County is the best part of Oregon.

Medford Sucks.

Grants Pass sucks more.

Eugene is cool.

Portland is pretty good.

Oh, and Corvallis sucks (where I live).

W3rd. Seriously though, I don't know too much about Medford. I'm right between Salem and Albany right now and I like it here. As much as I b!tch about the lack of snow we get here in the valley I'd rather be here than any other part of Oregon. Oh, and stay away from Bend. It used to be cool but it's just a freaking tourist hole now. However, coming from CA that might not bother you.

Guess you never get out of the Valley! What in the world is pretty about flat grass land? I5 between Eugene and Albany must be one of the most boring stretchs of road this side of Brothers!

Yeah I know how the tourist thing is....we are pretty close to Pismo Beach (used to live right there) and see what happens on summer weekends especially. :)

FYI "whitey" here!

ps - Yes that was sarcastic - I'm a WA native, and it is being ruined by all the MF Californians moving here.

W3RD! Keep you and your damn gangbanger kids out! :p

Kind of serious though, I'm sick of people moving up here to "make a better life for their kids."

edit: Oh yeah, and it rains every day in the valley, and the rest of Oregon is a high desert with 4 feet of snow in the winter and 130 degree heat in the summer.

Not clear to me that Southern Oregon has any less rain then the Willamette Valley, most of the wet storms come out of the south, they dump on the Rouge and Umpqua valleys before getting to the Willamette. I grew up in the Umpqua valley (RHS class of 68) and have lived in the Willamette Valley for 30yrs. The Willamette Valley is windier and colder in the the winter the closer you get to Portland the worse it gets. The Columbia River Gorge provides a pipeline for frigid Arctic air from Canada. This is a major factor of Portland weather. The Southern Oregon Valleys are essentially bowls between the Coast Range and the Cascades, with no easy passes in. The Umpqua and Rouge Rivers wind though narrow valleys on the way to the coast, so as I said before there is no prevailing winds. Thus temperature inversions and poor air quality is a problem in the winter.

Good jobs are scarce. Good luck.

No, the storms do not come from the south. They come from the west. Just look at a weather map. The jet stream brings storms in from the pacific ocean. Southern Oregon gets less rain because we are a bit south of the normal jet stream pattern and we are further inland so more of the moisture gets dropped in the coastal mountains before it gets to us.

Average Annual Rainfall
Eugene: 43 inches
Portland: 36 inches
Medford: 20 inches

So yes, we get less rain here in Medford. And it's not just the rain. In Eugene and Portland, even when it's not raining, it's grey and depressing in the winter. Like I said, you can go weeks without ever seeing the sun. Down here, we get a large number of nice clear sunny days during the winter. Like I said, it still rains more than So. Cal, but because you have periods of nice sunny weather in between the rains, it is not nearly as bad as Eugene and Portland.

Contrary to the stereotypes, we are not all farmers and hicks. And we are not a bunch of white supremacists like some idiot implied. There is a large Hispanic population and I've never seen anything to indicate much racism here.
Medford does tend to be more conservative than the ultra-liberal Eugene and Portland. But Ashland, just a few miles south, is very very liberal. I mean like Berkeley, CA liberal.

There are jobs here, although as you may know, Oregon has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. This extends to other cities as well. The job market in Portland is horrible.

I haven't been job hunting in the area recently, so I can't give you a good idea of what is out there.
There are not a lot of big tech employers. If you are looking for a networking type job, it might be tough.

I'm a software engineer at the Kodak Health Imaging manufacturing plant in White City. We have about 500 employees. We make laser imaging films used to print digital images of x-rays, MRI's, mammograms, CRT's, etc.
But we are a small IT group. Four software developers, 1 network/server admin, 1 dba, 4 application support people.

If you are looking for an easy assembly line type job, Kodak pays pretty well for those kinds of jobs (i think they start around $10 - 12/hr.) and has good benefits.
But most of our new hires start as temp workers through Kelly Services employment agency.
I was a temp worker for a year before I was offered a permanent position.

The other biggest employers are the two large hospitals (Rogue Valley and Providence), Bear Creek Corporation, and Pacific Power.

Don't tell me you're a Beaver.
How'd you like that Civil War?

You know, I use to think Medford sucked. I lived in Eugene in the university area and I was very liberal. I too, used to think that all of southern oregon was just a bunch of hicks, farmers, and loggers. But it really isn't like that. It's like any other city. A mix of lots of different types of people and lots of different types of business.

And even though the summers are hotter, I could never go back to the god-awful depressing grey winters of Eugene/Corvallis/Salem/Portland. I need to see the sunshine once in awhile.

OK I'll give you that.

But my favorite area is actually up the McKenzie which is sorta still in the valley. ;)
Anytime I leave town it's usually up 126 or 58 towards Oak Ridge.

That there's gods country! :)

Yep, but the North Umpqua is also right up there on the list of most beautiful places. Up around Steamboat.

Lucky you Im from Medford and Im currently residing in Davis trying to obtain my masters at the local college. Both cities are very much alike except these people here depend on their bike alot . Theres people in town and from neighboring towns that have given up their cars to ride bikes in effort to keep our planet green. Its what I would call a neohippy scene.. Hope that helps.

Me too. I was born in Oakland, CA and moved to Eugene, OR when I was 2. Lived there for 26 years before moving to Medford area.
