what phrase did you search, i searched praying bead, and none of them look like what i have right now (reason i posted this thread is because i found one in my room, maybe my gf left it here)
 
I think you are talking about a rosary. I don't wear them but sometimes those who do were given the rosary by a loved one that died. Or for example Bono(U2) wears one that he got by trading his glasses to the Pope for a rosary.

Kabballah bracelets. There are also Muslim and Buddhist prayer bead bracelets as well as the aforementioned rosaries. I'm sure there are thousands more different types.

it IS for show. You buy the bracelet and the money goes to the cancer foundation for Lance.
