I'm thinking abt opening a small computer services store.......troubleshooting, assembly, printouts, a tel. booth , scanning and a whole lot of small computer services....I was wondering if I could provide a CD backup service......I know this is a very sensitive issue but my final question is it is legal or illegal to provide a CD backup service? I mean I wont be providing the source for sure ..so will it be a problem? if it will be a problem, should I take a undertaking from the customer saying that agrees to a certain set of terms and that he understands what the consequences?....or should I just stay out of this backup thing?

Looking forward to your replies

You mean, making copies of CDs.... I'd stay out of it myself... Too many legalities you could run into.

Backing up personal files like documents, pictures, etc. would be fine for the most part. Copies of copyrighted cds is a no go. You will end up in the slammer grabbing your ankles:p

Also, burners are very cheap right now. Why would anyone use your service really?

Actually there is nothing illegal about making back-ups of music/software you legally own so rajkanneganti wouldn't be breaking the law. He's offering a service (backing up music/data) not a product (selling "back-up" music/data).

But, as was stated before, w/burners so common place I don't see a market for this.

Since raj is in India there is a market for him there.

Remember not all of us are from the USofA and not all of us have acccess to 79 dollar 48x burner hot deals... to us a burner is cheap and a replaceable item, to them its not.

My point is that there is a market in India for this kind of stuff. Put a few copmuters, an internet connection, a scanner an printer and charge them...... they will come.

Anyway the issue of cd backup is fine as long as your making one copy of a master copy for the original cd. That teh law allows. You might want to have them sign something that says your not responsible for what they use teh copies for. Your only providing a service because you have a burner.

The problem is once you have a burner ppl will want you to start burning mp3's.. since that's the new rage in india, i can see that eventually.

Exactly .......good_guy, are you from India? Yes, I'm 100% sure that it will work....this will be just a temporary business and I'm not looking into long term strategies......prolly 6 months or 1 year at max....then I'll prolly sell my puter and stuff to my dad's company ;)....I really want to get into this as it involves minimal amount of work and benefits are high.........so what disclaimer should I have incase I go ahead with this service?

Thanks everyone for your replies...

I am not living in india now, but I used to about 5 to 6 yrs back. I was there in 2000/2001 winter. Trust me 6 mnts to a year is too short but you could always lug your computer to a local place and do it... as for permits i dont know.. indian beaurcracy is quite a bitch.

As for teh disclaimer I dont know what to say at the moment but maybe later i might think of something..
