Seriously,
My stupid wife, bless her heart, has gotten it twice. The first time, some dude came up to her after she came out of the bank, telling her, they had too many speakers on board and the boss was gonna be mad, if they did not get them all delivered, yet the factory sent them an extra pair by mistake. Now these were supposed high end speakers that retail for over $2000 a pair, but if she would buy them, they would only cost her $125 (cash of course) She caved in. Dumb, in my book, but I didn't want to make her feel bad.
That happened about a year ago.

Next comes the guy who says he is going off to start a new life..gal just left him and he really needs to get home to his family on the east coast. Of all the things the X took, he managed to grab part of the jewelry. So he has this platinum / diamond tennis bracelet. It stil has the $6200 price tag in the box. Not only that, but he shows here a receipt where he bought it for $5800, so he must have negotiated a bit.
He offers it to her for $200 for some quick get out of town money. She takes the bait.

As soon as she told me what happened, it was so "dejavu" Sure enough, it's just a sterling bracelet with friggin zircons in it. :(

The funniest thing happened with the speakers. I told a co-worker what happened and yet, knowing that I was not going to use them, he asked to see them. I showed them to him and he offered me $150 for them!

What did I do?

I gave Bob the speakers, on the condition that he paid for all our barbeque this summer and that he buys all the beer. He now has the speakers. They don't sound that bad, really. :p

My friend spent $600 on speakers, junk they were. He called me to set them up and they didnt even work, they had cold solder joints and were breaking up all the time. Needless to say they are now sitting in the garage.

I had a brother (now deceased) who was a little bit slow and very trusting of everyone. The white van speaker guys took advantage of him for around $300. I would like to find those guys, and forcefully insert a large spiky iron boot where they would least enjoy it. I think they are the scum of the earth.

I got the same speaker bit about 12 years ago. These babies were liquid cooled and I could own a set for $200. The were supposed to have 6 speakers but the ware house screwed up and gave them 6 pairs. I said I didn't have any money and they pointed out that there was a bank accross the street. The worked it hard.

But I managed to resist.

You should take away your wife's authority to withdraw money. Set it up with the bank that she can only deposit. She'll still be able to use her check card and credit cards which will mean she can't get scammed any more

Those speakers can usually sound pretty decent if you add crossovers. Then again, you could probably also build a much better speaker yourself, and pay less for the parts and material... provided you have the right tools and equipment already.

Heh, a friend of mine paid some $375 for a set of "Dahlton" speakers. Doesn't even have a way of hooking them up to his stereo.

I went over to his place, saw the speakers, said "Nice speakers, did you buy them out of a white van?". I wasn't seriously expecting him to reply, "So you heard about that?". Yes, I LOLed.
