My best friend is getting married in June.. i need to write a speach and haven't really been exposed to many good ones.

Anyone got any examples or advice? Please keep the lame (smartass) responses to a minimum, i think this could benefit more than just me since i'm sure there are others that would appreciate some help.

Thanks!

:)

Reflect on how many good times you had together, good experiences growing up, do a couple "remember whens" that are relevant enough for people to get a good laugh out of it, things like that. I'm sure he's not expecting a state of the union address, he just wants you to show people why you were chosen to be best man and to say something nice about him and his new wife.

Don't try too hard, it'll show.

You are gonna be hammered while making the speech.

Keep the big words to a minimum and keep it short.

Talk about how happy your buddy is and how he found the love of his life and wish them the best.

A good best man speech shouldn't be something that could be cut and paste from another person's speech. It should be from the heart and specific to those people.

He shouldn't be. He's responsible for looking after the guests and helping to ensure proceedings up until the evening entertainment run smoothly. He should have been chosen by the groom because he's reliable and trustworthy amonst other things, so he won't do something stupid like get tanked and make the groom look like an ass as he slurs through his speech.

I agree, but its always good to have a good basis. I'm good at speeches, but i know nothing about the length, material, etc for a speech by a best man.

Avoid the digs at the best man and references to past girlfriends or anything along those lines. While it may get a chuckle or two, I think most people involved with the wedding will find it a bit tasteless.

Stick more to your personal friendship with the groom first. Just say a few words about your history with him (how you met, how long you've been friends, etc.), talk about his positive traits, make a correlation between him being a great friend and him being a great husband, etc. And then incorporate the bride by talking about the couple as a whole and how you're really happy they found each other and how you look forward to being part of their future.

Keep it relatively short (3-4 minutes), keep it from the heart and leave a good impression of yourself and the groom. And make a lot of eye contact with everyone while you're talking.

Here ya go.. Thank me later:

"True Love is the greatest thing in the world, except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, when the mutton is nice and lean, and the tomato is ripe. They're so perky. I love that." -- Miracle Max
