Any noticable difference?

I have a 4850 that's just kind of sitting around and was going to throw it in my woman's computer. She has a Q9300 OC'd to 2.6 or 2.7 I think, 4GB DDR2 800, antec 750W PSU, 256MB 8800GT, 24" acer monitor. The game she plays the most is Oblivion, but also RTS games too. If it's only like a 5% difference, I'm not going to bother. I have a couple extra 4870 cards, but I think I'm going to sell those.

It's only 5% difference at best. Don't bother installing it. And rather than it just sitting around, send it to me. I'm sure I could find a use for it somewhere... 😀

Sorry, not the answer you were looking for, I know.

From what I gather, the 4850 should provide a significant improvement in some games, less so in others.

Check out a comparison review such as this: http://www.overclockersclub.co.../sapphire_hd4850/9.htm

With the 4850 the performance difference really depends on the game ... some offer close to a 15% advantage & some less then 5% however it is safe to say its faster across the board.

One of those 4870's on the other hand would definately be a worthwhile upgrade for you ... in fact I'm debating replacing my 8800GTX with one despite the fact that I really don't need it.

256MB 8800GT... 24" monitor.... what the hell?

She should see a tremendous difference at her native resolution just because the 256MB VRAM would severely hold the 8800GT back at 1920x1200.

The 4850 is a noticeable jump over the 512MB 8800GT but the 256MB version was a pretty limited card, it's worse than the 8800GS, at 1920x1200 you'll see a HUUUUGE jump with the 4850 over the 256MB 8800GT.

I wouldn't upgrade from a 512MB 8800GT because the difference is just not worth it but the difference over your 256MB card is definitely worth it.

Hell, yeah. I will post my experience (only a day so far) of HD 4870 later, but it kicks the living crap out of 8800 GT (512MB) SLI. Especially in Oblivion.

Huhh... Are you sure thats what you meant? 4870 actually bests 8800 GT SLI? Thats very impressive

she used to have a 20.1" monitor, but i gave her my old one when i upgraded. the 8800GT was free for me, so it seemed like a good idea at the time.
