I like RPGs, but I've come to hate turn based combat. Well not entirely... I liked the mario and luigi type where you can at lease dodge and counter attacks. So I was wondering what other type of RPGs there are out there that may be in the same vein, as most of the JRPGs are very turn based. Something more action oriented like the Castlevanias would be perfect too. Any ideas?

Lost Magic is an interesting little RPG that has an RTS-like combat system that also involves drawing runes on the touchscreen for spellcasting. The story is rather juvenile, but I still enjoyed the game.

There a Final Fantasy title that's more RTS-like, but I forget the name at the time. Lock's Quest is another that's sort of like a mix of Rampart and tower defense.

The World Ends With You is ridiculously action-oriented, although its combat system is clearly not for everyone. I happen to think it's a great game, though.

Some other action-oriented RPG titles that come to mind (but that I haven't tried) are Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, Heroes of Mana, Final Fantasy: Revenant Wings, and Blue Dragon Plus.

Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand.

If it matters, this is a GBA game. Lunar Knights is essentially Boktai for the DS (it's the fourth game in the Boktai series) and is not turn-based. I have a copy but it's unopened so I can't say if it's any good.

Oops, there have already been so many iterations of DS (and I'm still using the massive first-generation model) that I completely forgot about the last generation of handhelds and was just rattling off titles off the top of my head. Thanks for the correction.

Even without considering the battle system, I thought the game was pretty lousy. I was surprised anyone would recommend such a game. I would have given it a D, or C at the best.

Heroes of Mana is a very loose remake of Final Fantasy Adventure for Gameboy, aka Secret of Mana 1, both games which I loved.

It's action RPG, but I personally was very very disappointed by it and never played more than a handful of hours.

There's another really fun one for GBA that also has a sequel, but I can't remember which it is.
