Any new video cards before Xmas?

Hello,

A long time back I read an article about nVidia coming out with a new video card that should be about double the processing power of their current card. That was a long time ago so I'm wondering if that date has changed, processing power has changed or if there have been no updates. I'm also wondering if ATI might have a card that really competes with nVidia's top one as I'm not concerned over which brand is the best as long as I get the best card.

Thanks

gary key said a couple of weeks ago that ati is not releasing 2950 pro until Q1, so nvidia will probably wait until then as well (his opinion not mine). he seemed pretty certain about it.

For the last couple of years, NVidia has released before ATI. Since ATI had horrible design/manufacturing problems with the X1800/X1600/X1300, they have not been able to catch NVidia. They seem to be 6 to 9 months back for the same generation.

It would be logical for NVidia to release a new top-of-the-range product before Christmas, as they did in the past. Those 8800's are getting pretty long in the tooth!

The Inquirer had several stories. The initial one, which is probably the one you read, said it had 1TFlop+ performance which a 1GB a memory, but they had a couple of reports later on indicating it would be a mid-range 8xxx card in between 8800GTS and the 8800GTX. I don't know if anyone has penetrated the information fortress.

Either way, if it exceeds the GTS, it will still please a lot of people.

Nvidia used to promise a fresh update every 6 months years ago, but due to increasing complexity and the inability to lower the process, it has been taking them longer

I really wish they would just give us an exact release date! Tired of just wondering what to do with my videocard upgrade!

The buzz right now among some of the NDA'ed journalists is that yes, G92 and G98 are mid-range and low-end parts. But they still hold fast to the position of a 768mb 24xx mhz shader part card coming this november. My guess is Nvidia is unveiling the G90 and trying to keep it quiet.

I can't think of any other reason why 8800 prices are going up and the stock drying up, or why nVidia themselves proclaimed a 1 Terflop part this fall (although granted, it could be marketing jargon. If they fudged the numbers through the same adding technique that came up with ~0.55 Terflops for the 8800GTX, we might be seeing something that has a similar result from 7800GTX to 7900GTX with a huge theoretical gain and an actual gain of about 50%).

Of course, I'm just speculating here. It's possible that nVidia just isn't ready with the G90 but originally planned to unveil it in November.

I think they used to do this in the past, but the backlash against the paper launches with the 6800/X800 generation has had a bad side effect in the sense that both companies now don't announce the cards at all until they are ready to be bought.

Fudzilla.com just added a pic of a new mainstream NVidia card. Looks like a 8600GT on 65nm process:

http://www.fudzilla.com/index....=view&id=3180&Itemid=1

I am guesstimating that the 65nm process will allow a new version of the 8600GT (eg: 8650GT) with higher clocks, while still requiring no additional power connector.

Note the Display Port connection. We are now going to need DP to DVI adapters

Something is definitely coming soon from NVidia. If there is a new mainstream card, there should also be a new flagship.

Thanks I'm hoping it is a new flagship - hopefully with a supersilent cooling fan or that Zalman has a solution ready for it when it comes out.

are the new cards going to be a refresh or a brand spanking new card? i was going to maybe get a second 8800GTX for sli, but not if they're releasing a bigger and badder card that absolutely rapes the 8800GTX. i don't really care if it's an 8850 or something that's just got faster clocks and runs cooler or with less power.

Looks to me like it's what they did. Taped the sticker then cut out the fan opening.

Thanks for the info. I'd really like to build a new one by XMAS but if I have to wait until next year, so be it.

I guess I'll wait until after xmas since I'll have to wait til January for the CPU cooler I want. Any word on new high end cards from nVidia or ATI - I know they've released some high end mid range cards lately but I haven't seen anything on their next high end cards
