I know that it's all the rage to make RPGs 3D, but they just really don't do it for me. I just love me some pre-rendered graphics! Are there any new(ish) RPGs out there that keep to this "old school" style but with just updated graphics? I'm having a hard time finding anything.

I just got Fallout Tactics from gog.com for $6 but as far as I know isometric 2D engine games are dead and buried next to joystick based space combat sims. RIP.

What do you consider newish? Heretic Kingdoms would fit your description. It came out in 05.

I would like some Diablo/D2 if the resolution wasn't locked at what 640x800? I tried playing it again and just couldn't get past how bad it looked.

Indeed, I also own it and I do recommend it, the graphics are still of superb quality by any current standards, it's certainly a winning aspect of Sacred 2 whatever anyone can think of it. You can also adjust the camera angle to your liking, there's some limitations but generally speaking there's possibilities for all tastes. I stopped playing it for a while, about a month, but I'm back at it since the latest patch and it gets my attention again, it's addictive enough.

I'm really enjoying replaying Torment and BG II on my netbook, they run beautifully on such a reduced system. I might just revisit the Fallout series too.

Dragon Age: Origins can be played isometric style (or 3rd person view), but it is 3D.

Try out King's Bounty. It's pretty good, but I got bored with it before I could finish. The fights got a little repetitive, but its probably close to what your looking for.

Nice!

I re-installed D2 to give that a try, and I knew it was too good to be true, it does work off-line, but not on Closed B.Net... a shame. I hope patch 1.13 will officially feature higher resolutions. Heh, un-installing again until then.

You can use a glide wrapper for Diablo 2 and re-size it if you choose the right settings. That's what I do, and it doesn't affect online play.

I think you can play the Witcher as an isometric game if you want to.

I also recommend Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Old game from 2001 ala Baldurs gate. That is if you do not mind something dated - but its a great game.

I must admit I had a hard time getting far in it - I think the combat system was a bit frustrating but from what I hear if you keep playing its well worth it. Somebody else here hopefully can vouge for that.

Also more current and notable is Titan Quest. I got it through steam , its like diablo definitely good. I got maybe halfway through so far - I havent played in a while.
