Any new space oriented games like Privateer or Jumpgate?

Have you played it? If so, how bad is the learning curve?

I found the learning curve extremely steep. So steep I stopped playing after a few days. The voice acting is also very very poor. If you can deal with that, you might like it since there's a lot more you can potentially do than in privateer.

No, I never got around to it when it was out.

Check out X3. I like it, it has improved a lot since its release. You can pick it up on steam. The learning curve only gets steep if you start doing things other than killing people, but even then its not that bad imo. There are tons of guides at the official forums and they explain everything you need to know.

EVE Online has the Kali/Revelations expansion coming out later this week. Might be worth checking out for a new player at that time.

I've been in the mood for a space combat/commerce game lately as well, and the X3 seems to be the epitome at the moment. It does sound like a pretty intense learning curve though from all I've read. But for $20 through Steam, I may check it out.

I did the demo for EVE a while back. I like the concept, but the controls killed it for me. Personally I want first person control of my vehicle during combat. Clicking orbit>attack wasn't my cup of tea.

The reviews of Darkstar One are OK. It sounds pretty much combat oriented though, the trading is pretty skimpy sounding from what I read.

I actually just booted that up again after a few years of gathering dust. It's still a great looking game, especially if you force the antialiasing up, but the game play is only so-so for me. The voice acting and dialog is very stilted, and overall there are really only a couple of things you can do in the game. Probably my biggest issue with it is that it just throws enemies at you every time you fly away from dock. Pretty funny to undock from a station, near a police base, a navy yard, and the biggest planet in the system and see people flying all around shooting at each other. Fly to a piece of empty space, perhaps to do some mining, and bounty hunters or marauders materialize out of nowhere.
