I know sound cards are always a small factor in building a PC, but i just got some new cans (Shure SRH840) and i want them to sound good.

i have decent speakers also M-Audio LX4 which are about 3 years old.

I'm aware the X-Fi is good, and so is the Auzentech X-Fi Forte, and the asus Xonar D1/DX. Which is the best of these if theres nothing else coming out soon?

Or! is there something worth waiting for? anything new in the sound card department?

My onboard is barely cutting it. i use W7 64

HT OMEGA. You don't have to wait for anything to come out, because it is already here.

cs uses software hrtf

so zonar would be fine.
somehow doubt you'd hear the difference.

I doubt there's much difference. I bought the Striker over the Xonar because it's PCI. Oh, and HT Omega has amazing customer service so that might be taken into consideration.

If you're going to be wearing cans all the time, I would suggest ASUS Xonar Essence STX

That's the point. There aren't any new cards which doesn't put any price pressure on the old models. No new cards means you're stuck buying 2 year old cards with shoddy support.

what kind of support are you looking for? realtek support?

as of now, my Xonar DX under W7-64 is 100% perfect. What other support would i need? their tech support has also been responsive.

the age of the card doesn't really matter to me, its the best the market has right now as bang/buck @ $70 shipped new. For that price, it was worth it to get enough boost in quality that i can hear in both my headphones and speakers. i dunno what equipment u use, but if they're crappy then i'd be saying what you're saying too.
