Any new NAS solutions/innovations?

I was wondering have the ATOM/i3 NASboxes been replaced by lower power/cost ARM solutions.

Do they have a feature where they are powered off until they get a WOL ping request?

And are there NAS boxes that have apps so I can access them remotely from the internet.

I'm also curious what the best budget NAS/remote access type solution is.

I basically just want to be able to access my music/movies/docs from anywhere on my laptop, desktop, and iphone.

I currently just have a 1.5tb external USB drive attached to a WDTV live plus, but it's quite old and I'm looking for something to replace it.

This kickstarter looks quite interesting, but the hardware is shitty (no gigabit ethernet, USB 2.0 which is ridiculous):

If you build your own, the WOL, etc features are hardware dependent.
However, a good software to try is NAS4FREE, which is a direct continuation of the original FREENAS project which has since been bought out.
NAS4FREE is modular and supports wireless, remote access, etc.
