My interests have made another full circle since the old Mechwarrior games and am wondering if there was anything new along that line?

Oi ! MechWarrior 3 maaaan... Those were times. Loved that game to death. I'd say it's high time someone made an old school mech game with jaw dropping graphics and amazing gameplay! I'd be all over it :D

Corporate: I'm sorry, today's market only allows to create games that have great graphics or great story, and quite frankly, great graphics sell more. Your dreams and hopes are entirely free though, but we're trying to remedy that problem as well.

I believe that Microsoft bought the FASA/Mechwarrior IP a while ago, and is just sitting on it. Rumor also has it that they are aware of the crysis mod and have given the devs their blessing.

I'd love to see a new MW game too, but like soxfan said, MS owns the IP for the franchise now :(. It was a fun series -- I could spend hours just configuring and fine tuning equipment loadouts and experimenting with them. Could use a serious graphical update though, and the AI was not especially good, at least in the MW4 games (I'd always end up with lancemates that ran around in circles or bumped into each other).

I miss Mechwarrior games. MW4 was a blast to play online. When I left (~2 years ago) there was a heavy mod community for MW4:Mercenaries. They added a bunch of mechs and weapons (Many of which were simply gay as hell and not inline with anything found anywhere in the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe). They even had their own gaming 'hub' outside of the Microsoft one. There were actually 2 of them - NBT Hardcore and something else. If you want to get a MW fix you might want to look into them... or hold out for the Crysis mod :)

Man I miss MW. I also miss that Shogo game. I wish this genre would re-ignite. :(

Heard that Relic bought back the rights to Homeworld, but no news as to what they intend to do with it.

There were only a select few games that motivated me enough to build an old windows 98 system dedicated just to running them. Mechwarrior was at the top of the list. I even invested in all the CH Products stuff (Throttle, Stick, Pedals, everything).

There is nothing else like it, and I am sad to say there likely won't ever be again. It seems companies don't want to commit the resources needed to develop immersive, in-depth simulations anymore. Mech sims, Flight Sims, Space Sims... Anything that takes more than a few minutes to learn how to play is largely a thing of the past. I love my Windows 98 Box !

It is quite a bit different from Homeworld, but if you are looking for an epic universe simulation (think Elite style), check out X3: Terran Conflict or X3: Reunion (Fully patched by now) by Egosoft. Egosoft

This.

I would LOVE a new heli sim. Or a great space sim. Bring back the Descent serious. Privateer. Free Lancer II. Apache vs Hokum. Comanche 4. IL-2 Sturm. Silent Hunter. Even turn based games like East Front, West Front, MAX.

Jesus, I could go on and on. All we get these days are fancy FPS's. Shit even Fallout 3 is an FPS for Christs sake! Now I like a good FPS as much as anybody trust me but the trend is bothersome. I suppose the one exception seems to be the MMORPG genre which is thriving but hell thats just FPS with a sword.......

I'm an FPS player at heart, but I would absolutely love a decent Mech game. I don't care if I look like a geek with my joystick.

PC gamers got left out in the cold by MS when they went console and killed all the PC gaming franchises and developers they owned. However one of the original Battletech designers has gotten the rights back to make Battletech games again. Link Of course that's old news. I haven't heard anything more about it since.

Stop buying every game that comes out where you run around in 1st-person and shoot things with a gun, and maybe they'll make some creative/classic games again.

PS -- I miss Mechwarrior too

Mechwarrior was awesome. The last one I played was MW3. Was MW4 good? I loved MW2-mercenarires -- maybe I should dust off my stick and find a copy of MW4-mercenaries :)

None of the Mechwarrior games was as good as Mechwarrior2 and MW2 GBL. Mech3 and Mech4 both sucked by comparison.

If you're more into the strategy/campaign aspect of Battletech you should check out MegaMek.

Crysis total conversion mod. Multiplayer only.

Think MW3 with crysis graphics.

-Edit- It's not done yet -Edit-

10:1 it's never released.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking too. 90% of mods for games, primarily total conversions never make it to completion. The designers start with overly ambitious ideas that would take retail game companies years to finish, and after 2 or 3 years the project either fades into obscurity and is cancelled, or pretends to be working on it when really no progress has been made in months. An example is Black Mesa Source which is a conversion of HL1 to the source engine. By time the mod is released the source engine will probably be over a decade old if not more.

i thought wizards of the coast bought fasa, which then was gobbled up by hasbro. maybe the mechwarrior property was sold separately?

The electronic rights to the IP were sold to MS.
