I've got my Dell laptop up for sale so I'm starting to look around at netbooks. Some of the HPs' look nice like their new 311 series. I'm leary to buy since I hear there are some dual cores around the corner. Any news on these?

Pine Trail/Pineview with Integrated memory controller and GPU (chipset is not integrated...) is due out Q1 2010.

I thought they marketed it as SoC. Guess it was just marketing heh.

as an aside, since the TDP of the cpu/chipset combo for pineview is something like 8 watts, do you think we will see battery life of 18 hrs on upcoming netbooks?

Performance won't really be improved though, and it's still only 32-bit.
does it really matter if it's 32 or 64bit for a netbook? and I thought pineview was bringin 64 bit across the atom line anyway.

but yeah, performance is a bit disappointing, I was hoping to see something more. Maybe we'll see more dual core pineview based netbooks with the lower TDP. Hoping so anyway, preferably coupled with ION

Performance is indeed dissappointing. I bought my wife a Dell 10v not too long ago. I put Vista Home basic on it and it didn't really help much even when using a memory stick as ready boost - just barely enough to notice. Shes' always on the main rig or her sons' Gateway laptop cuz she says the netbook is just too slow.

Even low-end laptops are now shipping with 64-bit Windows 7. Although many consumers may not see the benefit in the software they run, their machines will be capable of utilizing 4GB of RAM should they choose to upgrade, and they'll have the option to run 32-bit or 64-bit software should they need. I think it'd be nice if netbooks kept up with the 64-bit trend, even though they'll inevitably be slow anyway.

(edit)Like the Athlon L110, the 2650e, etc... if AMD did it, I'm sure Intel could come up with something lol
(edit again)I forgot that, since the Atom is enhanced and updated, but has the same basic ideas as the original Pentium, it's not gonna be x64 compatible no matter how they swing it. Maybe a new architecture, Intel? Something that when run at 1.6GHz actually bests a 1.2GHz Pentium M? ...it's obvious I have no love for Atoms, isn't it :)
