Basically the MySQL db admin quit 3 months ago and no replacement was hired. So I'm only the system admin, not db.

Basically they never did any backups of the server, I just backup the "MySQL" directory daily, ie file level backup.

So today they need to restore something. Am I able to just copy the files back and it'll be okay or i need to find an expert ?

Basically it'll bring the file back to 9am this morning.

Your description sounds like there is no recent backup you can call on to be restored. You said it was several months ago since a backup was made?

However, if you do have a backup that can be restored, then you can simply use the utility which is already packaged with MySQL named mysqlimport. You can call it from the command prompt like this:

Code:
mysqlimport -u [uname] -p[pass] [dbname] [backupfile.sql]

TO greatlyease your way, I suggest you install phpMyAdmin, get comfortable using it, and then with phpMyAdmin all these exercises are much easier, including restoring from a backup. It's a GUI for MySQL and it works f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c!

I'm kinda curious as to what "restore" means. Does it mean that you need to restore an entire table or database to a previous state? Does it mean you need to re-insert some deleted rows? Something else?

That used to work with older versions, I've copied those files in order to migrate servers, but I don't know if that still holds true. And it could depend on the table type too, I was just using the older MyISAM tables at the time.
