Any "must have" games for the PS3?

I just acquired a PS3 (60gb launch model) for a good deal right here on these very forums, which was delivered a couple hours ago. I purchased it mostly to play Zone of the Enders, but my secondary uses for it is going to be a media device/bluray player.

I figure I may as well pick up a couple games too. I haven't followed the Sony console scene since around mid-life of the PS2 and PSP, so I don't know what's out there other than Gran Turismo (which honestly I have no interest in as I have Forza for the xbox).

Any suggestions? I have a fairly varied taste in games, action/adventure being probably #1 and then sports games (which I play exclusively on consoles) #2 - though I can just as easily get those on the XBox. I'm thinking probably more sony-exclusive titles here.

I'd put God of War 3 in there along with the remastered GoW 1+2 collection if you missed them.

Metal Gear Solid 4 also.

metacritic > PS3 > filter by score

I put zero faith in metacritic or "magazine" reviews. I do put faith in word-of-mouth suggestions on specific titles (which are also usually accompanied by a personal mini-review), which is why I'm asking. Thanks though.

I'm not a big console gamer and like you I don't really care for the hyped reviews, I bought a PS3 last year just for bluray purposes when I got a new snazzy TV. A few games that impressed me were:

Uncharted 2. Definitely a must have. Very fun game overall.

God of War 3. Also a very fun game, I did not buy it, only borrowed from coworker. I didn't think the game lasts long enough to warrant a full price tag, it may be cheap now.

Metal Gear Solid 4. I never finished the game, but it was very fun.

Games that I tried based on people's feedback that I thought were just mediocre.

GTA4. Very overhyped game.
Assassin's Creed 2. Much better than the first, but still get very repetitive after a while.

On a slightly more serious note, I'd say almost all of the exclusives are liked for a reason. Uncharted, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and a few others. I didn't really care for Killzone or Resistance... or really MGS either.

I'm like the OP. I fell out of the console scene a few years ago, and only briefly bought a 360 for GTA 4 when it came out. I sold the 360 about a month later, and haven't owned a console up til last month. Bought a 160gb slim for the new Mortal Kombat, and since then I've been catching up on what I've missed.

One recommendation I can make is God of War 3. I hadn't ever played either of the first 2 (though I do have the GoW 1 & 2 collection for PS3 now), and I was blown away by it. I beat it within 3 days, which is fine, as it only cost me somewhere in the range of $28 brand new.

I've read & heard that the Uncharted games are great adventure games. The 3rd one is due out soon, so you can probably pick up the first 2 on the cheap.

I was able to pick up inFAMOUS from Best Buy last weekend when they had it for $10, and that's been a pretty good game. Haven't touched it since L.A. Noire came out though, but, I plan on getting back to it soon. It's like a post-apocalyptic GTA meets Fable meets...climbing buildings. Nicely paced, and just overall fun to play.

Sunny, I own a few PS3 games, so if you want to try them out... I have:

3D Dot Game Heroes
Castlevania (whatever the new one is called)
Final Fantasy XIII
Fist of the North Star
Folklore
God of War: Collection
God of War 3
Little Big Planet
Motorstorm
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time
Time Crisis... 5...6? I can't remember which one it is
Uncharted

The Ratchet and Clank games are pretty good. Folklore was fun for the 20 or so minutes that I played it :p. I have a bad habit of never finishing my games :\.

Well, there's a lot of variety to choose from, so given people's tastes they may want different recommendations. For the 360, though, they know their choices are just Gears, Halo, Fable, and Forza :p

Which would only make sense if we knew the OP personally. Given that we don't, each thread turns out exactly the same. There's no reason one can't pull up an older thread and look up those games to see if it fits with the genres they like.

Or... you could just read the OP:

I think that would be a fairly narrow discussion simply based on the criteria I laid out. As you can see already, I haven't said "No, no, no, not that one either" to any title that's been mentioned. But I also sincerely don't know what Sony exclusive titles are considered "good" by people I somewhat trust (yes, you guys), so simply going to google/metacritic would be useless to me. There's been several titles mentioned that I've never even heard of before, so this line of questioning, in my opinion (which honest is the only one that counts), is very useful to me.

I thikn inFamous is being given away whenever the PSN store is back up for the whole fiasco with the security breach. So don't buy it.

Will that work for accounts created after the breach? I'm thinking no.

I do have a Sony account, and I'm already seeing credit for the SOE PC titles I've played. But I don't have a PSN account, and I think like you - probably not going to happen.

On a side note, all of my local gamestops have Zone of the Enders in stock... EXCEPT the one across the street from where I work. Go figure.

That's a good point. Infamous, Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD, and 2 other games are part of what you can get for free. You can choose 2 out of the 5 offered, and Infamous is one of the better ones if you don't have it yet.

PSN account had to be created by April 20th or something though. I forget the exact date.

And you're the guy complaining instead of just not clicking on the thread, there's a complainer every time so you're also a contributing to a recurring theme. Just don't enter the thread, it's just a forum...it's not life or death.

Sunny D, since you like sports I highly recommend MLB the show for the PS3. It's the only good baseball game on the market (and has been for the past 4 years). It's a little tough OOB, but you can adjust batter timing to make things easier.
