Any MS Word gurus here - Need help with a form

Somebody sent me a form that they are making and want me to help them with it. The problem they are having is that whenever an individual types in a textbox that is part of the form, the shaded textbox expands. We want it to stay at a fixed length. I tried setting the maximum length attribute in the form field properties and made sure everything was protected, but other than that I have no idea. Any guesses?
