Just picked up a 1992 Suzuki GS500E from a friend.. my first motorcycle, but we are having some trouble getting it running correctly.. and the soonest the nearest mechanic can get us in is May 23rd! I don't want to wait that long!

Its a 1992 with 6500 miles, kept in extremely good condition.. only problem is it has been sitting for a little over a year since he bought his new bike. At first we could not get it to idle at all, it would only run at at high rpm.. then die.. We found a broken vacuum hose which seemed to fix that problem.. It will now idle correctly at about 1200-1300 rpm which is normal for this bike from what I understand.

But whats happening now if you open up the throttle, there is a stuttering or sluggishness.. If you try to put the bike into first gear it will die if you do it below 4500-5000rpm.. You really need to crank it up to prevent from killing it... If you just leave it in neutral and rev it up it will sputter below 3000-3500rpm, when it finally gets up to the 4000-5000 range it seems to be fine.. It also has a pretty big delay in response when you open it up in neutral as well, takes a while for the bike to respond and rev up correctly... almost like its not getting enough gas..

We put new gas in the bike, and changed the spark plugs.. no change there.. same symptoms... My friend thinks its related to the carburator.. needs adjustment.. but I played around with the fuel mixture knobs and set them according to what the maint. manual suggests, with no apparent change... The only other thing I can think of is rust/dirt in the carb... but I really don't have the mechanical knowledge to pull it all apart, although it does seem fairly straightforward from the book we have.. But I guess I would prefer not to screw it up any more than it already is...

Anyways, any suggestions? I hate to have to wait 20+ days to get riding! I thought I would throw it by you guys to see if anyone had any ideas... Thanks!

Yeah, carb problem. Maybe some old fuel clogging a jet.

Careful with the fuel/air mixture screws. You'll get the best power at high RPMs slightly lean, but you also run the risk of frying your engine ;)

just get a new carb jet kit(or whatever they call them) if it has sat for a year, they are bad, also check the fuel bowls that feed the carbs on start up, they might be clogged.
