the other day after charging the historically weak battery, i engaged the starter button and the bike just kept cranking over. i hit the kill switch and took the key out and it kept turning over until it ran out of juice / i unplugged it (which took about the same amount of time).

after i plugged the battery back in after another charge, and tried the ingition switch the only thing that happens is i hear a small relay type click. all the other lights etc.. are working. the battery at this point wasnt charging up to the correct voltage (checked with voltmeter, so thought that might be the problem). however i just tried a brand new battery and the same thing happened.

Let me get this straight, you pushed the starter button and it started cranking and then you hit the engine kill switch and pulled the key out and it STILL kept on cranking?

It's either electrical shenanigans with the starter switch/relay (less likely) or broken starter (most likey). You're not supposed to have the starter engadget for more than 15 secs at the time.

Actually the more i think about it, it's definitely the starter relay. The fact that you pull the key out means that the starter relay is fried and sticking (otherwise it would click-off when the power to the contol leads is cut... ie when you remove the key) and now when you try to start, it doesn't want to click-on.

its the relay if it continued after the key was off....the starter should not be getting power then but it still was as teh contacts in teh relay stayed closed/connected. I highly doubt you burned up the starter also. They can take alot of abuse. Simple enough?

yupp, that's what I said. It would make sense that the bike wouldn't crank afterwards, because the screwy relay doesn't flip to connect anymore.

Would you mean the starter solonoid instead of relay?

do bikes actually have solenoids on the starters? I kinda figured the've got one way bearings or something, rather than a mechanism that kicks it onto a flywheel.

EDIT: Never mind, morning brain fart.
