Hello,

With the summer months coming, I have decided I want a motorcycle. Particularly, I'm looking for a "sporty" bike (lol I guess that's what you call it). Like the Suzuki GSXR. My price range is around $3,000 and I guess the year I'm looking at is anything 1999+.

Also, I know nothing about motorcycles, I have never ridden one nor do I know anyone who rides one. I can see this will be a problem when I want to "try" one out so I'm not sure what to do. I have a truck so I can take the bike to parking lots or empty airfields to practice, but I won't actually be able to "test drive" one.

A question I have is, what size is right for me? I know it will be tough for you guys to determine this online, but I'm 5' 11" and 150lbs.

A bike that I really like, is this:

Cool color, cool bike. (I think so anyways).

Thanks for the help, if there's any other info you need, just let me know.

UPDATE

Thanks for all the help guys,

I enrolled in an MSF class only $225 for a weekend so not bad.

still looking at bikes though so if anyone knows of any ( I live in Massachusetts).
please let me know.

Reguarding the GSXR I posted, no I am not going to buy one, I know I am far to inexperienced, I was just trying to show the style of bike I wanted.

Thanks again!

No.

1000CCs is ENTIRELY too much for a newb.

Start on a 600 at most. Take a MSF course. Wear your helmet and gear.

Joke thread? Or Serious? That bike would throw you off before you could last 8 seconds. Take a motorcycle safety class first, they will show you how to ride, etc.

Even 600 is too much for a starter sport bike.

If you know nothing about motorcycles take a course. I don't know whats offered in your area but a course is well worth the money.
If you've never ridden before you might not want a bike with all those cc's, lower is better to start with.
Also as everyone I spoke to told me when I was learning to drive, everyone crashes at first, might not be serious but do you want to spend $3000 and fly into a ditch? or break the plastic on your fancy sports bike?

I'm no expert by any means this is just my $0.02.

Thanks a lot guys. No this is not a joke thread and seriously, I did not no what 1000 cc's meant but after reading, I agree that it would probably be like riding a bull for the first time. Thanks to the forum link I will check it out. Also, I do plan on taking a safety class.

A 1000cc Sport bike is not by any means a beginners bike. If you have never ridden before you should start off with something smaller, lighter, less powerfull and definately not RED 🙂

Please don't take that opinion in a negative way as to your abilities to learn quickly and handle the power and control a heavy machine, but I made my living for 10years as a Motorcycle mechanic. I have seen first hand what becomes of people buying more bike then they could handle as their first bike. Start off with something in the 500cc range or less.

I understand what you guys mean. The bike I pointed out was based purely on aesthetics. Just wondering though, why not a red bike? I do like white and blue though.

Seriously if you've never ridden before you need to start on a 500-600cc bike ... stay away from sportbikes as a rule, especially models like the GSXR, even the 600cc models of that bike would be a bad idea since they are still pretty fast & very uncomfortable on anything other then a short ride.
My advice as a 20+ year rider is to get somthing comfortable and small with an upright riding position and get used to riding before you think about going fast, also be sure to get lessons & always wear a helmet... a spill at even 20 mph can do some serious damage without it!

I mention RED only because statisticaly, be it cars, trucks, motorcycles, ect., RED vehicles are in the most acicdents, I beleive.

I know what you mean now. I remember when I bought my red miata, everyone said that. No accidents yet though. 🙂

MSF FTW

Do not buy yet, they will have bikes they want you to use. Some nice easy 250cc nighthawks or something similiar.

You need to get your cycle license before worrying about which machine is right for you.

Oh and for the dork that says 1000cc isn't too small for a newb, let's just say he's wrong. That's alot of machine, especially with it being a sport bike.

Just signed up for the course, May 6+7 🙂

Do I need to get my permit first?
Oh, and I guess with this course they just mail me a license.

1) that auction is a scam, 2006 gixxer will run you abour $9000
2) you need to look at ninja 250, ninja 500. Absolutely no GSRX, r6, -RR, r1, zx-6r or anyhting that looks like its from motogp. You weigh next to nothing, so you definitely don't need a 600cc supersport.
3) sign up for motorycle rider courses - they are offered in local community colleges

Don't even think about getting anythign brand new that ends in -R because you will hurt yourself. For someone your size, ninja-250 or ninja-500 would be a great start. Just take an MSF course and then go test ride a ninja 250, theyre about 3K brand new 🙂

IIRC the course will allow you to skip the ride portion of most state's cycle endorsement requirements.
Take the written portion, and you got your license.

That's a really bad choice for a first bike. You should start out on something smaller like a 250 and ride that for 6-12 months and then move up.
