It's something like $400 a month for 2 years that you have to cover yourself (it's basically full-time volunteer, so no other income from a job during that time period). You're viewing this as a religious exercise. Look at it from the perspective of a young person who may have never spent time away from home before. The mission is a grand adventure and a socially condoned one at that.

You asked if and/or what kind of send-off gift is expected for someone travelling to foreign lands to convert heathens to their religion.
