I haven't played it since it first came out. The others I played the daylights out of.

Not sure if it was the hex that put the hex on the game for me or the giant death robots, but I think I put a measly 200 hours into it.

It's been out of for a while now so can any share some mods or total conversions if any that can reignite the just one more turn flame?

The developers did spend quite a lot of time reworking the virtues so that they were more interesting and some strategies weren't overpowered. If you haven't played since release it would be worth revisiting. However, the base game wasn't ever really appealing to me. I hated 1UPT, and it's combat implications.

This.

It's still trite, arbitrary, gimmicky, and gamey. It feels like a poorly fleshed-out board game, with simplified rule sets for the sake of rules, rather than a modern strategy game attempting to approximate real world tactics.

If Firaxis had any sense and balls, the much smarter and obvious choice would be simply to implement a "weight penalty" for too many units of a certain kind ending their turn on a certain tile type.

Also, the diplomacy is still inexplicably wonky, even after all the patches and DLC. I had Isabella declare war on me three times, lose each time, and on the next turn after peace was negotiated, she'd be "Friendly" with me, and want to "Announce to the world a Declaration of Friendship?"

Honestly, EU and Paradox games in general so thoroughly rape Civ's dynamics and diplomacy it's hard to take them seriously anymore.

Civ IV :p

Civ V has been worked on quite a bit since release though and IMO its definitely worth a revisit. 1UPT is a bit crap though as others have said. It makes combat a pain in the balls for me and makes the AI useless at warfare except on the highest difficulty levels where it has insane advantages. I never liked the stack of doom either but I did prefer it to this.
