Hey guys, I've read alot of the military theads here already. I'm still confused, I work for the army as a civilian comp engineer and want the experience/training/serve my country in the military. I'm considering the army NG or the AFNG. I want to keep my day job and not sure if i would make a career the mil. I have a masters degree and in shape. Also im pretty hands on and not to experienced in management. MOS i'm looking at are fire support specialist, water treatment, or things in IT/engineering/enviromental. What do you guys suggest? Thanks!

I am currently in the national guard. Im an 11B. Let me first start off by telling you that in the Guard you hardly get a chance to do your MOS. Unless you are a fulltime Guard member with no other job, your chances of getting a lot of time in your MOS is pretty unlikely. Normally, your one weekend a month will consist of many other various training excercises. Your FTX in the summer will basically be the only time you get any hands on. This may or may not be true for every guard unit, but I promise you for at least 90% it is.

OCS is having nearly 100% acceptance right now. I am looking into it myself, but my running really lacks and I would like to work on that before I get a packet together.
Anyhow, I am not sure how the NG works but if you go AD you will not have a choice of your MOS. You do get a 'wish list' of what you would like your branch but you have no signed contract before you are shipped out.

I really recommend the National Guard over the Reserves. The NG generally has MUCH better signup bonuses. Also, since you have a masters degree, get your commission!
