I am looking to build a MAME computer, and I want to be sure to be able to play MK3, Metal Slug 3, and other newer games. If you run Mame, what do you have and whick games can you play at full specs? All the pages and documentation are 2 years old and useless. Thanks!

Uh dude, what do you need to know about MAME? I am the MAME master! :) MK3 I can play with an Athlon XP 1600+ pretty dang well, and Metal Slug 3 is no problem for an XP 1600+. However, if you want to play ALL MAME games, I'd suggest the fastest single processor system you can afford. The hard drive games are a BITCH on a system. KillerInstinct and KillerInstinct 2 can make very good use out of a P4 3.2GHz machine, and I'm wondering if that will even play it at 100%. You can use another emulator for KI and KI2 though and play it at full speed.

If you want a dedicated MAME machine (I like MAME32), build a system with a fast CPU (a cheap $64 64MB 8500LE will more than do for the graphic card) and then get one of these! :) :)

I don't know about the latter MKs. Mortal Kombat II and III will run, but not at full speed, these will get very choppy. (System: P2.4C 768 ram and latest Mame)

Athlon XP2400, 512Mb PC2100, GeForce4 4600 - handles all the Metal Slug games (including 4 :D) and MK3 at full speed. Killer Instinct makes it choke a little.

I'm helping my friend build a 1:2 scale arcade for a MAME system. He really wants to play Area51. What is the minimum computer he should have to run that well? He's the one that's really into it, so I don't know jack about MAME. I, however, have the mad crafting skillz. :) The box looks like a mommy and daddy arcade fell in love and made a baby. It's about 4 feet tall and the controls are going to be just the right height to use while sitting down. I'll probably have some pics of it before too long.

That cabinet looks pretty cool. Any reviews? Also, am I right in assuming you can switch out the controlers to add trackball and steering whell support?

Jack, what about MK3? Can you run at full speed? And how much ram? In case you are all wondering I am trying to find the minimal system. I know most games will run on a 2.4, but I am looking in the Athlon XP 2000 range. And do you think an Radeon 7000 64mb will do to TV output?

Bubble Bobble is one of my all time favourite arcade games. I've recently got hold of it for the GBA...the midi soundtrack still brings a tear to my eye :)

No reviews of the cabinet, as we're making it from scratch. This one is gonna have controls for two players. Joysticks, light-guns, buttons, I don't know about trackball or steering wheel on this size. Once we finish this one, we're gonna prototype a full scale one. The big one should have 4 player controls along with light-guns, trackball, and hopefully steering wheel. If any of you guys live in the Maryland area or within reasonable driving distance, we'll be taking orders for them once we finish the prototype. Does anybody know if Area51 can run full speed on lower than an XP1600? I'm sure the fastest processor he has is slower than that.

snik, am I reading this right, you have a 2.4 chip and can't run MK3 at full speed? If this is true I should be concerned. I was planning on getting a 1.8 and being fine..

Well man, it's like this. Some levels I can play most of the fight at 100% (sometimes it will drop to ~90%, but still very playable). But on some levels my FPS drop under 50%. :(

anybody else? (this is a great thread!) I am hoping to hear from someone with a Athlon xp ~1.67 - 1.8 -2.0? my p4 2.66 runs everything (not Crusin) perfectly, but I am looking for mk2 and mk3 perfect on the cheapest possible Athlon xp. Anybody play with an older vid card? (radeon 7000 ish?)

Emulation is handled almost entirely by the CPU..therefore I'm guessing that the video card has a very small part to play.

Yep, a Radeon 7000 will be fine. When it comes to MAME it is all about the CPU.

I am just starting a mame cabinet. I have been goofing around on my XP1600+ and various versions of Windows. I have found some "chop" on the newer games and the HD based games just trash my system. I am thinking of trying a faster Athlon, but I am wondering if this is a case of more Mhz the better. If so, I may have to buy an Intel Rig (ack!). Also, there are various "optimized" versions of Mame out there. Just check out mameworld.net.

Can someone give me a link or gimme info on what MAME is? From reading the posts, it sounds like you can play console only type games on your pc? Thanks

I have the X-Arcade controller and it is the Biz... Makes MAME worth having I can tell ya. I didn't know about the cabinet which is cool. I'll have to get a bigger house first though unless the wife lets me do away with the free standing fridge freezer... :p

MAME

Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator

it's strictly an Arcade machine emulator, not console. It emulates the PCB's found in standup arcade games, from Pong to Anything that is not too 3d (Tekken, MK4, Virtua Fighter). It is awesome with the addition of an authentic arcade control stick and buttons, which use your keyboard port and work well. I recommend the HotRodSE, and the X-arcade is available at Fry's (more buttons, more money) The thing about MAME that is good (but confusing) is that since there are 4000+ games spanning 30 years, a P2 will handle some and a P4 can't handle others. That's what I'm trying to figure out. I want to go as high as MK3. I gather that an AMD 2400+ or a P4 2.66 is the way to go for that.
