just wondering what it was like :)

I was complaining to a few friends over drinks a few nights ago about the fact that I need something more than a mcjob and need to go to grad school, but can't narrow my focus in on any particular subject matter (the price of dual-majoring in college, lol) and one of my friends commended that she could really see me as a librarian somewhere because I have a jonesing for knowledge and am anal retentively organized.

MRS degree?

Sorry, just kidding.

Actually my dad got his library masters degree after he got his history bachelors. He later got an accounting bachelors with GI bill money after he was in the army (was drafted). He works for the post office where he makes way more money that he did as a librarian anywhere else.

Masters of Library Science

Most colleges have renamed it to MLIS, Masters of Library and Information Science. It is still reffered to as a MLS though.

I talked to the law librarian at my school, and he said that the top librarian guys make 100K. The only thing is that you have to go where the jobs are.

A good friend of mine got her MLIS 1.5 year ago, and she loves her current job at a small library/town. And, according to her the job is not very challenging and same as the schooling because most of what she studied was bogus. However, she enjoys her job of meeting people and gets pay relative well. IMHO, it doesn?t require organized person to be a librarian because my friend isn?t an organized person.

Actually, it is the only librarian degree. All library positions require a MLS.

not all positions....only "Librarian" and upper management. My fiance's current position doesn't, but once she get an MLS, her pay will increase $3000 a year based on that alone, even aside from any other promotion or raise.

I have found that it is rare for a position of "Librarian" at a library of any suze to not require a MLS degree. Many public libraries will hire people in the process of getting their degree. Some small town libraries and those that are in great need will accept those without their degree. There are also many positions at libraries (especially public) that are not full librarian positions and do not require the degree.
