Depends on where you're sending it. It is illegal to send US money to certain countries.

Well a college sent me a $5 bill in the mail. So if it's inside the continental United States, I'm going to have to say its legal.

The law of common sense. I'd say sending currency in the mail would violate that.

I sent a $100 bill in the mail to my sister for her birthday once. Why wouldn't it be legal?

So the mailman can be a thief just like anyone else? I wonder what's with all the missing mail/misdelivered mail/package lately? What a bunch of potheads working at postal office.
Their job is to send the mail from point a to point b whether it is 20 dollars bill or not :(

Sad truth is even Fedex and UPS people steal, especially if you don't put insurrance in there and it's obvious that something valuable is in the package.

We all would love to live in a better world.

Within the US, it is perfectly fine. Sending to other countries, which may includes APO addresses, there could be custom importation issues; many countries do not allow currency to be imported unless you have an import license. Also note that sending currency is always at your own risk -- even purchasing insurance would not work, as insurance claims do not cover lost currency.

Illegal? No.

Stupid? Yes.

Never send cash through the mail, always send a cheque. If it foes missing, you just cancel it, and you don't lose anything.

I regularly send and receive US currency in the mail as part of ebay trading. Never had a problem with it, and I'm not in the US either.

1. It is legal
2. BUT the post office states that you can't send money through the mail
3. That is because they will not insure it.
4. The will insure negotiable instruments (non cash) only by registered mail.
5. So: It is legal but the Post Office will not accept it if they know.

Wrong

Can I mail cash?

You may send cash through the mailing system. However, we recommend using personal checks or money orders when transmitting funds for any reason. If you prefer to send cash you should take advantage of our registry service, which provides maximum security and indemnity against loss.

Has nothing to do with legal but has to do with the security is very low when sending cash, anyone can spend and no one will give a damn about it... :D

I once ask my friend to ship my ipod and passpord to me using Fedex Express, he did, but forgot to put insurance. My ipod was gone but my passport was there. It's just amazing.
