Any known problems with Netbeui & ICS (win98se)?

I had everything working properly. Both computer's were able to access internet. Two network cards in server connect by a cross-over cable to the client. During setup, I had to select my Dial-up adapter as my method to connect to the internet because Earthlink DSL requires you to Dial-up before working online.

Anyhow, everything working fine, excpet I had to disable netbeiu in the client computer before trying out ICS. Now that its working, I re-enabled netbeiu so that my network computers can recognize each other (don't know why I have to enable netbeui to do this) but now my Internet Connection sharing is not working. Hmm, I tried reinstalling ICS in the server. Confirmed that all settings are correct in the client. I even removed netbeui again, but now ICS doesn' want to work.

If anyone know's of such conflicts with netbeui and ICS, I'd appreciate your take on it.

I dont know if this really helps you but why dont you try downloading Sygate. Its a free trial for 30 days and then cost you 30 bucks to keep it. It was so easy to setup I couldnt beleive it.
It also uninstalls very cleanly should you not like it. The reason you need netbeiu to see your computers over your network is probably because you only have File And printer sharing bound to that protocol. That is the way you would want it though so people on line can not see your network. Never bind file and printer sharing to tcp/ip. Oh here is the manual setup for Sygate so it should be foolproof.

Server
NIC connected to your lan tcp/ip properties
IP-192.168.0.1
DNS-disable DNS
Wins-disable wins
Gateways-Just leave blank
Bindings-netbeui and client for microsoft networks

Client
Nic connected to your lan tcp/ip properties
IP-192.168.0.2
DNS-192.168.0.1 and the host needs to be whatever the name under the identification is for the server. Also make sure both comps have unique name but same workgroup
Wins-disable wins
Gateway-192.168.0.1
Bindings-netbeui and client for microsoft networks

after you enter in these settings on both machines and reboot just launch the sygate installer on the server machine. Select server mode and thats it. It will say diagnostics and youre done. Another cool thing is that it has a manager that you can use that monitors traffic on the network and everything. Good Luck

I ran ICS on my Win98SE computer. I had TCP/IP installed on my whole LAN for net access, but unbound to file and printer sharing. I then installed NetBEUI and bound it to fine and printer sharing, and everything worked fine.

Thanks Dolphinjay for the suggestion. I bought Sygate @ Fry's for $9 today😀

Thanks Sukhoi, not bounding file/print sharing might help free up netbeui🙂
