To make a long story short I'm currently doing a part time WFH position which involves supporting ISP customers. I had been developing a business on the side which was thriving at the time but in recent months has declined significantly. I've been applying for a variety of jobs through recruiters and job sites, but most of the offers are either for jobs too far away (more than a hour and a half away) or very low paying (15.00 or less).
My IT experience is pretty varied I've worked with Exchange, MS Server, VMWare, Unix and nearly every version of Windows. I've worked in almost every support position from level 1 helpdesk to desktop support to engineering to systems administration. In addition to software skills I'm also comfortable with hardware repairs and upgrades.
Up until this point I have never had an issue with finding work, but over the last few months I've applied for many, many jobs with not much success. I've revamped my resume at least 4-5 times. I've read many articles on how to best present my skills and experience and I've stripped my resume down to the most relevant information, leaving a lot of white space for easier readability. I take care to read job descriptions carefully and tailor my cover letters to reflect what the employer needs. But so far I'm still not getting any decent offers.
At this point I'm really confused and frustrated. I'm willing to work a level 1 helpdesk position again if it's in a company where I can move up. (but I need to at least earn enough to make it worthwhile, most of the helpdesk offers I've received are 12-13 per hour and more than a hour away. I'd end up spending most of my pay on gas). I'd appreciate any information on job leads or companies that are looking for experienced IT personnel.
