Just bought a notebook with XP Home on it, & would like to Install XP Pro just so all my PC's are using the same OS version etc.

Will XP Pro disk just upgrade Home to Pro or does it require a reinstall of the OS?

The upgrade will work. Actually this is about the only install-over of a Windows OS that I'd feel comfortable with. As long as the current Home Edition installation is okay (no wonky device drivers or such) it should work fine for you.

That's exactly what I was wondering, thanks...

A very good point. I should have mentioned it.

I'm kind of surprised that Microsoft isn't more careful to warn people about the use of in place upgrades (including repair installations) and their effect upon service pack and hotfix patch levels. I guess they figure it's pretty obvious, more so than the issues with service packs being broken when you used the original NT4 installation CD to install things like networking components. Still... I wonder how many people are running with degraded security because they've done a repair and don't realize that they've reverted to an earlier configuration level.
