Any issues with buying a 4 year old Herman Miller Aeron?

Hey folks,

I'm looking to pick up an Aeron off Craigslist. One of the chairs is four years old. Does anyone have experience with this model chair? Do they hold up well over time?

Thanks in advance!

Whatever you do... absolutely do not go look at it first.

Offer to go take a look and if you like what you see, you'll buy it.

Ha, I knew I forgot something! The owner doesn't live near me. I don't want to drive all the way out there if I know from another owner that these things fall apart. For instance, I've had countless Office Depot craptastic chairs that barely last a year. That's my point.

No idea, but don't they have an 8 or 10 year warranty? Not sure if it's transferable though.

Have you spent any time in one?

How much are you paying?

I have one, I wouldn't neccessarily reccomend it at anywhere near the price.

However, yes, their quality and minimalist construction look to be world class durable for a chair.

No, unfortunately I haven't spent any time at all in one! I want something that's comfortable but more importantly a chair that won't strain my back.

I would pick it up for $200-250.

There is a 12 year warranty but apparently that's only good for the original owner.

What if the original owner had a flatulence problem?

That's where the mesh surfaces of the Aeron really shine! The stink flows right through and is vented away.

In your normal chair that stink would be caught between ass and seating surface, slowly diffusing into the cushion material to be released at a later date.

12 years, and I believe it is NOT transferable. It only applies if you buy the chair from an authorized dealer. But the 12 year warranty should tell you that the chair will last more than 4 years.

For $200 I'd buy it in a SECOND if it's in good shape. It's probably the base model, but I could live with the base model for $200.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks. And this chair does have the lumbar support.

Chairs, and especially our bodies which sit in them, are highly individual. I strongly reccomend that you make your way to a high end store if you can, and introduce your body to some before you make your choice.

more than likely because you have used it often or not at all.

If you had a brand new one next to it I am sure you'd see a difference if it is the former situation.

1) make sure it is the right size. I used a med(2dot) at work and the small or large (1 and 3 dot) would not be comfortable to sit in for any extended period of time.[the length of your thighs might make the pelicle mesh frame under your knees cut into your hamstrings.] The dots are located under lip of the back support near the headrest area.

2) I used my aeron for 2+ years at work and with all the employee turnaround there were new chairs coming in all the time, so I got to feel the difference between new and old. The pelicle on the backrest generally holds up well, but the seat pelicle definitely loses tension over time. It's a gradual change but eventually you start to feel minor aches in your legs that you don't remember having when the chair was new. It kind of goes from feeling like a trampoline to a hammock. The springiness just isn't there.

For $200+ it will likely still be better than any foam and synthetic leather task-chair you will find at most office supply/furniture stores.

Mind you probably won't be able to get it re-meshed, or even do it yourself if you found any pelicle mesh.[something about the pelicle needing to be tensioned properly at the factory to create the proper saddle shape.]

I am pretty sure you can have these chairs refurbished. Maybe it's just a local thing, but my pseudo-trendy friends had mentioned this long ago when he was picking them up secondhand and reselling them.

Size is important though in these, I think more so than just a normal chair.
