I'm thinking of buying the 5 GB iPod. I have an IBM craptop but am planning on buying a firewire card to hook things up. I just wondered if anyone on ATOT owned one and would be willing to give feedback on the iPod.

just bought one for my PC.

Buy one.

Make sure you buy a decent case for it though.

Get a LP player... they will be the next rage! Seriously... it will be the next big "digital" storage technology!

I found out the hard way, DON'T lick the record as it spins.

I don't own one but I will soon. Having used one though, I agree.

I do that. I use macs at work and PC at home. Just buy the Windows version iPod and keep the iPod in Mac format (i.e. don't format it to Windows) and you can read with both machines (PC via XPlay/EphPod)

If you leave it in Windows format (FAT32) then you can use it on both without XPlay or EphPod. Macs can natively read the FAT file system - Windows requires something like MacOpener or MacDrive to read HFS+ (Mac file system).

I thought I read somewhere that the Mac can't read the windows format on the iPod. I may be wrong about that though.

It's the best mp3 player out there. Like someone else said, if you are getting the 5GB, make sure you also buy a case for it (the thinnest case possible). I have the 10GB Mac version. Very cool device - IMO, best place for it is the car, though - especially if you drive long distances.

The mac case sucks for any iPod model. You can't access the controls without taking the iPod out of the case.

edit: I bought this case from Marware. It's kind of expensive, but I think it's the best case out there. It has a completely removable cover which is pretty unique and very handy.

edit #2: if you want more info on anything iPod, just go here rather than ATOT

A guy who works for me owns one and brings it with him everywhere. He seems very pleased with it.

If you buy a PC iPod you should be able to use it on yer PC and Mac. If you buy a Mac iPod you can only use it on yer Mac (unless you run 3rd party software on yer PC like Xplay).

Just like w/zip disks. PC formated ZIP disks can be read on either platform, but Mac formated ZIP disks can't be read by Windows.

That 3rd party software (If I remember correctly) is only about $20-$30 and integrates fairly nicely. Just like an external Firewire HD

The 5GB does not come with a case - the 10 and 20GB versions do...

Ever since we got the 10GB demo at work I've been drooling over it. I'm finally getting a 20GB version some time next week.

Looks dam nice and the storage would be great. But I REALLY dont' like how the people behind Mac have given the same as the Mac inteface so I resent it! Sure its for THEIR platform but I bet a lot of people like me resent it. I think the macs are great but too pricey for me.

The iPod would be great but I wanted to use the Mac software and FULL features of the iPod not just a cut down that will dof or you *Windows* guys....

Another note too big for my liking. Too big in my pocket. My MD player is very nice in my pocket. Very thin and a whopping playback time also:D. pffffffffffffffff 10hrs..lol. Only problem with my MD is that the slow recording time.

(needs faster then MD and faster then NetMD and better software then the sony and its *patchy* so still waiting. The Memory Stick walkmans look good but the playback time is only 10hrs, also no inline stick remote like on my MD. The iPod has an inline remote but I would like a screen on it)

Nice design to the iPod though.

I used to have a Mac model which I would take to work and update on my Mac there. A few months ago, I got laid off though and lost access to my Mac.

This week, I downloaded MacDrive demo, formatted the iPod Fat32 and can now use Ehpipod with it. :)

The iPod is one of the greatest things I've ever owned.

Got a MAC version from work.
Did not like using it through a MAC as I did not like the iTunes software.

Got myself a Firewire card for my home PC and converted the iPod to a PC version.
Works great.
There are a couple of PC apps that will run on it, I am using EphPod - works very well.

Excellent battery life, earbuds it comes with dont last long though.....they don't have an L-shaped jack and the connection soon gets worn by being bent back and forth.

Hmmm, does any firewire cardbus (for a laptop) work with the iPod? The smartdisk model Apple sells seems a little expensive, just wanted to see if there was something cheaper out there. Other question: cheapest place to buy an iPod is...............?
