Any interest in sharing a WINDOWS dedicated server?

I've been wanting to set up a Windows hosting account to tinker around with ASP.NET a bit, but all of the cheap hosting plans I've found are lacking in one way or another. It seems like there's never a problem filling up a Linux server, but is there any interest in a Windows server?

A few details that need to be figured out:
- I'm not qualified to manage the server, so if there's anyone who IS qualified who would want to get in on it, that'd be great.
- I don't know if there's any software licensing issues that would come with sharing a server among a group of people.
- I have no idea what hosting services are good
- Anything else?

If anyone is interested, let me know.

I'm in for a decent chunk (i.e $20-40 a month)

I can do some basic management with Windows boxes, but I'm far better at Linux :(

I think there is interest, if resources and prices are right.

Good luck :)

This is one host I've found:
http://www.webhost4life.com/dedicated2.asp

The $299 server would be about $7.50/GB of disk space, 12.5 GB of bandwidth per GB of disk
The $399 server would be about $5.00/GB of disk space, 12.5 GB of bandwidth per GB of disk
The $499 server would be about $3.10/GB of disk space, 9.375 GB of bandwidth per GB of disk (????)

SQL Server 2000 isn't specifically listed there so I don't think that's included in that pricing. Not sure how much extra that would be per month.

If you want to tinker around with ASP.NET why not just use IIS and VS.NET on your own PC?

seriously, if you want to do ASP.NET stuff, buy Small Business Server Premium including MS SQL Server 2000 for about $900.00.

set it up on any basic PC with a decent internet connection and VOILA you have a web host.

Thank you for the suggestions, but I'm aware of the other options and I'm interested in THIS option. I figured with several shared linux servers going already, there might be some people here interested in a windows server...

If you are really serious about this catch me on AIM (devioustrap) and I'll get you some suggestions. There are way better options than what you outlined above.

PlatGold > For hosting those licensing are usually leased, rather than purchased due to the high upfront cost.

i spoke with MS Licensing and they told me that SBS 2003 comes with unlimited internet access licensing.

People lease the license for Win 2003 server license as well ($20-30 a month) rather than paying upfront. I'm a bit confused as to what you mean when you said "unlimited internet access licensing."

sbs2003 is very different licensing wise than windows 2003.

sbs2003 server comes with unlimited web access (you don't need cals for web access). sbs2003 premium is about $900.00. if you purchase all of the components and licenses included with sbs2003 separately it costs over $5k.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but if you guys are interested in doing this, I may be able to provide pretty much any Windows OS at no cost assuming there's something in it for me :)

well I have an *unlicensed* server setup that I just tinker with on the side at home. It's got static IP, 768k upload/3MB download and I'm running 2003 server on it. I have no trouble with the software, being the Systems Engineer for the company where I work. I'm not great web developer, but I know the basics and have a site I'm developing (though it's hosted elsewhere on a linux server, LOL). Depending on what you want to do, we maybe could work something out.

Or contact a sales team at wowrack.com, a company that I am consult for. I believe they have a Windows dedicated server starting at $125 / mo. They also have a fat Internet 1 Gbps pipe which is real nice. If you don't know how to manage the server, you can always sign up for their managed server solution. SQL workgroup edition is available for like $99 / mo.

Contact their sales team sales@wowrack.com. Tell them that err from anandtech send you over, they will give you a good deal :)

my thoughts exactly...plus paying for "windows server" just feels wrong.

Speaking of ASP.net, wasn't there a working OSS implementation of the frame work? I've goofed around with c# some and i was pretty impressed. Not sure what to make of ASP though, i never was a fan of that setup.

AgaBoogaBoo,

Wowrack.com always runs special customized boxes. Contact their sales to get a quote, it won't hurt :)

Also you don't really need Plesk if you are not really selling hosting accounts. It would be nice, but not entirely needed.

PM me if you have any questions. I am very familiar with this company :)
