Any Intel G1620 owners here?

Just wanted to get some real world advice on it. Was thinking of upgrading an older system I have which includes a AMD x4 9550 2.2Ghz processor. I was wondering if there would be a noticeable gain in performance overall even though I know the intel is a dual core. The system will be used for gaming, video, and general use it has a gtx 260 currently in it. Anyone use this processor for gaming @1080p?

For video editing (multi-threaded apps), not so much. They're pretty even. For single thread apps, the g1620 will be twice as fast as the AMD x4 9550. For gaming, the g1620 will be faster; but not by much. Having said that, aside from the power saving, I think the g1620 is NOT a good upgrade from your current system. I would get atleast an core i3 if I were to update.

Yeah, skip the G1620 and spend a little extra for a Pentium G3258. That pentium has an unlocked multiplier and allows overclocking.

Thing is I can get the motherboard and CPU for really cheap right now, and I figure if I hold out for a bit I can grab a 3570k and toss it in there.

It would depend on how cheap is really cheap.
Any more than $75 for the CPU / Motherboard is probably not worth it.

You can usually get a G3258 with a motherboard for around $100 or so online or at Micro Center.

That is too much money.

Wait for Pentium G3258 and H81 (with overclocking unofficially supported) to go on sale at Newegg for $75 to $80, free shipping.

This will be much faster than a G1620.

If it will actually go down to that price for both the cpu and the motherboard then I guess its worth the wait.

Wait, the CPU its self is $79.99...I might as well get a G3220 and a cheap mobo for like $80 cash.

By video, do you mean video editing or just watching videos/Netflix, etc. The Pentium should be fine for watching video, but a dual core without hyperthreading is not great for video editing.

That 9550 is pretty slow though, so I think any modern Pentium would feel much faster in everyday use. I also think it would be faster in most games, and a *lot* faster in some games. Whether to wait for a deal on the 3258 or get an i3 is a tougher question.

Well its more of a quick upgrade, just for Netflix, Youtube, HD Video and gaming. Its not going to be a killer gaming machine, but from what I hear the G3220 is almost on par with the i5 in terms of gaming.

The sale price on the Pentium G3258 and Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V (unlocked multiplier overclocking unofficially supported) is usually around $75 to $80 at Newegg. This is the combined price for the processor and motherboard.

There are also other Pentium G3258 and motherboard combo deals that come and go also. They happen fairly regularly, so if you can wait a week or two you'll probably have a chance at one or two of them.

I think I paid $35 + tax on my G1610 at MC. ECS H61H2-I ITX board was $36 at Newegg.

I'm using it for my HTPC, works really well, it runs cool and power-efficient. (Some would argue IB has better performance / watt than HW, especially running legacy code and not the new instructions in HW, which aren't in their Celeron CPUs anyway.)
