I posted this thread in Operating Systems. However, I know that traffic appears to be light in that forum, so I would appreciate any insight from the DC community on what these programs do (Idle particularly bugs me) and what the gear icon in Wintop represents.

Now to your system issues.

Idle is the time the cpu is not in use. On some systems it is the process that keeps track of how much time is used by other processes and allow the total time to equal 100%.

Kernel32 and the other processes represented by the GEAR ICON, are the core processes that make up your Win98 installation. They are not items that you can't delete, but may be loaded and unload as needed by the OS.

Here's Wintop and here's another task manager. I just installed the latter but I don't think I'll use it often. It uses 70% cpu cycles by itself! :Q

BTW, I love everything Might & Magic but MM6 is my absolute favourite. As far as RPGs are concerned, I rank it with Final Fantasy 3 (6). MM7 & MM8 are excellent too.

I'm waiting anxiously for MM9. What will it be then? Is it Legends of Might and Magic? Will it feature multiplayer gaming? (As in 2 people work together to go through the game)

I think MM9 will be the standard MM RPG, with various races like MM8. I don't know Legends. The 3DO site offers screen shots but doesn't explain the game. It looks like Drakhan to me, a 3rd person single action RPG.

Heroes Chronicles is now out and they have ported the Crusaders to the PC. Man, they produce games way faster than I can play them. I still have a backlog of about 30 RPGs at home to play.

This is my favourite MM6 site. It has a lot and complements my Prima Guide very well. It even has the game editor, if you want to cheat. 😉

Nope, not MM, but Heros of MM III. I noticed the Icon for Heros III on the screen capture you posted.

Hey, i play Heroes too. Thing is, AB expansion pack doesn't seem to work with Detonators 6.18. I've since downgraded to earlier versions but it's not currently installed.

dennilfloss, just wanted to let you know everything you have running is normal. Don't sweat it.🙂 I'll tackle Idle, you will noticw that Wintop is showing %.10, as in 1/10 of 1%. This is a fraction of 1% and has no bearing on your CPU useage. You CPU was Idle for this amount of time.

The rest are likewise system files, used for communication and processing of different services from Dial-up Networking to printing to mail. Some are particular programs (Noton AV, the Dnet client, Zone Alarm and Win-Top itself) those are pretty obvious.

I've been using Another Task Manager for some time, works well to kill a pesky task, and see whats using your CPU. If it's using 70%, you must have the cpu cooler function enabled. If I kill Dcypher and start Atm with the cooler option enabled, my cpu temp will go from 88*F to room temp in a minute. It realy proved useful a few days ago, my keyrate took a dive. Atm showed me the process that was suck'n up 75% of my cpu. That process also was using my dial-up while I was online. It was something I picked up, I think just by puting MS Flight sim disc in the cdrom, didn't even instal or play the game. The .exe was from broderbund, whoever they are. Didn't take long to track all those files and reg entries down and nuke them. Handy program on ocassion..

0.10% idle time? What a slacker. Those are wasted blocks there. Time to tear your rig down and rebuild her. Then you really will know what wasted blocks are. 🙂
