Any info on XP support for Nehalem?

Tried to search the forum for Nehalem+XP and didn't find much detail.

I just ordered a new copy of OEM XP SP3 tonight before the cutoff, didn't know if that means sales or just new PC's.

I plan on using it for my next build, prob Xmas time, but if Nehalem actually releases retail by then, I haven't heard whether XP will support new CPU/MB/Mem Controller of Nehalem.

I presume that the OS has to have the drivers for the MB/CPU etc, but with XP end of life, has anyone heard whether MS/Intel plan on anyone running XP on Nehalem boxes?

It would be up to Intel to support XP for the chipsets that are compatible with Nehalem. There's nothing intrinsic about XP that is incompatible, Nehalem is still X86/x64 compatible.

Thanks,

It just got me thinking with the reports that Intel wasn't going to move to Vista. I wondered how long Intel would remain on XP with Nehalem. Or maybe that forces MS hand to ramp Windows7 even sooner.

Anyway I won't be able to upgrade before next year anyway so it will be interesting to see what is on this years Xmas/Black Monday lists.

Intel move to Vista? What? Those are completely unrelated topics my friend :-/

The Micro architecture (x86) is still the same-- therefore there is nothing that should render the processor incompatible.

Of course it will, dont be silly. It'd be unprecedented for them not to. There's P45 drivers available for windows 2000, if that helps you sleep at night.

Well, maybe not the processor specifically, but there HAVE been incompatibilities with older version of Windows with more recent CPU/Chipset/BIOS combinations. For instance, there were issues with installing Windows 98 onto Dell 400SC computers (P4, Intel 875 chipset, Dell BIOS). I never did find out exactly why it wouldn't work properly, and I'd read that there were ways around it, but you definitely couldn't install Windows 98SE onto a Dell 400SC and expect it to work without some additional work.
