I built my current computer late last year and my Toxic 6950 was about as awesome as you could get for a reasonable price at the time. Now we have 7000/600 series cards, but I generally prefer to skip 1 generation to get more noticeable gains. I recently upgraded to one of the 1440p Korean monitors, so I'm definitely feeling the need for more power. Crossfire seems like a risky venture with microstutter and heat/power concerns. Is there any info on next gen cards? Wondering if I should bite the bullet and try Crossfire, or wait a couple months for next gen.

On a 6950 I would wait. I may have waited if I wasnt building from the ground up again. I had a 6950 before my 670.

A 1200mhz 7970 would be 2x faster than an HD6950 Toxic. You could grab an HD7950 + OC and sell the 6950 for the time being. That would allow you to get faster performance while waiting for the next generation. HD8000 series is not slated to launch in a couple of months. From what I read Q1 or Q2 2013. I wouldn't expect HD8000 series until January 2013 at the earliest since Sea Islands isn't on AMD's roadmap for 2012 at all. People keep saying it may launch in 2012, but why would it? AMD has not once said so. They may start "shipping units" out for revenue by end of 2012 but I bet actual cards won't shop up in retail until 2013.

Next gen? nvidia hasn't even released all of their current gen. I doubt we see next gen stuff for another year.

That's because NV was late with the desktop GTX600 roll-out. HD8000 series is developed independently. HD7970 launched December 22, 2012 or so. That means it's going to be 1 year old in just one more quarter. HD8000 series is rumoured for the first half of 2013. Since AMD's new GPU strategy involves aggressive pricing, they are likely to launch earlier than GTX700 series so that the firm can charge more $ and gain larger profit margins. There is no way that HD8000 series is 1 year away since it's still built on 28nm and the generation after will use 22nm I believe. No point in delaying HD8000/700 series for another 12 months.

Don't think this year we'll anything new but at the latest spring 2013 for AMD. NV probably will launch shortly after the GK110 for the masses followed by GK114 respin.
