I was just curious if anyone has heard any info on the 7800 GS. Especially on the number of pipelines it will have, and price! Will have to decide whether to save cash with this card or go all out with the new 512MB card coming and not upgrade for a long time. Decisions, decisions......

If you want to crank up in-game settings and resolution, then it might be a good move.

But as of right now, with your current GPU, you're technically just fine.

Personally, I went from a Radeon 9800 to my 7800 GTX, but I can honestly say that I don't feel I should have done that. My 9800 Pro served me well enough. Of course, now I can play at higher resolutions, and pretty much any, and all in-game settings at their highest possible ... but it's not like I would have died playing BF 2 at medium settings at 1280 x 1024, instead of high settings at the same resolution with some AA and AF. Differences in visual quality IS indeed present, it IS noticeable ... but it's nothing to be blown away by.

To "skip" a few generations is, as I personally believe, the best thing to do, before upgrading a GPU.

In you situation I would certainly wait either for nVidia's next generation (G80) or ATi's (R580).

6800GS - Nov 7th (replaces 6600GT to compete against X1600)
7800GS - Nov 7th
7800GTX 512MB - Mid. November

No idea on prices/pipes/etc.

Probably-
G70 chip (may have unlockable pipes)
16 pipes
256-bit, 256 MB

That's my best educated guess given the situation.

Thanks guys- that was my guess- 16 pipes, 256/256, but I read somewhere on maybe 12 pipes. Waiting for the r580/G80 would make the best economic sense- but playing Bf2 at 1152x864 with settings on med/low for ok fps is frustrating at times....

If they could release a 16 piper 256bit & 256 meg card with 16 pipes on the G70 achitecture on AGP & PCI-E it will sure be a winner if its under $250

i don't think it will be a 12-pipe card since the 6800GS is already a 12-piped card. most probably like you said, a 16-piped 256/256. this card will replace the current 6800gt and ultra with the cheaper .11 micron (or .09 micron?) process
