Trying to pick up image processing the hard way... Reading "Wavelets and Filter Banks" by Strang and Nguyen, but would learn better getting my hands dirty and fooling around with MATLAB. Anyone know a good tutorial online?

Thanks. Will check it out. I'm especially interested in perfect reconstruction. Would you happen to know if the books covers this well?

More like filter banks with downsampling that you can apply to achieve wavelet decomposition. I've read that you can get good compression by doing this followed by run-length encoding, and are still able to get a perfect reproduction of the original image.

nope bzbee..that book doesnt cover wavelet based image compresion and reconstuction...it is has linear and non linear filtering methods.. i ll ask around
