Any ideas to make a futon more comfortable?

The couch in my living room is a futon. Sleeping on it is fine. Sitting on it I can feel the bars underneath which makes it very uncomfortable. Any ideas what I can do to make it more comfortable?

I got a cardboard box (one that held a guitar so it was rectangular), flattened it, and put it under the mattress. The futon is still not that comfortable but at least I don't feel the bars

BINGO!!! ;)

I had the same problem with the "standard" 4" mattress that came with our futon (it is just stuffed with "fluff" that flattens down in no time). Get at least an 8" thick one - preferably with an innerspring. I picked one up at a local furniture store for about $150, but WELL worth it!!!!!

4"? Wow that's thin...

A sprung mattress will be much more comfortable - I can vouch for the cardboard too, it's the only way I could sleep on mine til I broke down and bought a bed mattress for it (I wanted it more for the low height than the couch part anyway).

Get some wire and stretch it over the bars for more support for the cushion.

This is the right idea - I got an innerspring mattress right when I bought mine, and have never had that problem. The only problem now is that the mattress is just a bit heavy, which makes the bed kind of difficult to fold - but not too bad.

EDIT: innerspring futons

We had a futon a couple of years ago in our apartment. It was a pretty cheap one; college furniture, ya know. Anyway, we started getting "waffle ass" as I called it, so we got some foam and put it under the mattress. It wasn't like a couch or anything but it was a lot better than the mattress with no extra padding.

I don't know what it is called but you can buy some partical board that has holes in it. Cut it down then use some plastic ties to secure it. Then go and get some of those eggsell foam mats and put that on top.

Hey Rossman!

overstock.com has some 8" innerspring futon mattresses for $259 and shipping is listed as their standard $2.95!!!!!!!!! even the Grand Nagus has to admit that is a shipping bargain!! ;)

Here is a Linky to their futon page

I think the one I bought from my local Boscov's department store was a "comfort coil" manufactured by either Sealy or King Coil (I can't remember)

Oh really? ;)

I just wish I could see the futon/frame in real life before ordering online :(

I've heard people recommend pipe insulation, the kind that you wrap around your 1" diameter housing pipes. Never tried it though. I just bought a foam pad from Walmart for 17 bucks. It isn't an egg pad, it's more uniform, so to speak.

get some of that egg carton foam from Walmart and put that on as padding. Helps a lot.
