I work at a big datacenter, which happens to have several T1's. Mainly mainframe stuff, IBM S/390's, IBM VTS system, old Amdahl mainframes, tape silohs, etc. But of course there are also several pc's, on the network, that are like totally unattended. What I'd like to do is setup an ftp dump for myself on one of them, and an irc BNC, run VNC on it for remote access, etc.

BUT...

I can't afford to lose my job and of course they're not going to let me. Also, at the university I go to there are several T1's, and I was thinking of somehow setting up stuff on one of the pc's somewhere.. lol. even thinking of finding some long-lost cat5 drop somewhere in a closet and throwing a PC w/ no monitor/keyboard/mouse in there on the network, hopefully no one would find it. :)

oh, and before someone mentions "throw RC5 on those mainframes!", I am one of several computer operators there, and part of the job is monitoring cpu usage on the boxes. trust me, I would be fired in minutes

I'm pretty sure that if you do go ahead and set up the ftp dump on those systems at work you'll be promptly fired as there are usually several people who are knowledgable enough to catch you.

If you look back on this several years from now, I'm sure you'd think it was pretty dumb to lose a good job (it is good isn't it?) over something like an ftp site.

Same for the university systems. Would you be willing to risk getting kicked out of school over this?

If they are strict enough to fire you from too much CPU usage (and I can understand if it is a production box which can cost the company hundres of thousands of $$$ in downtime) I have to ask ARE YOU CRAZY TO EVEN TRY TO SET UP AN FTP!!? Think about it. Is it worth risking the loss of your job over? Probably not.

Why do you even want to go to all this trouble?

Dude - a good admin knows every system on his network, and if he sees a PC with a name he doesn't recognize, he's gonna know it doesn't belong there.

:( damn, it was just an idea!

lol.. I'm too chikkin to try it anyway.

Now the box-in-the-closet-at-university I could try, I put it there once (a cheap box in case it gets stolen) and I'm done with it. The only thing that could catch me would be logs in the routers as to what ip connects to that IP, and then backtrack to me... maybe I'll just find someone who lives in the dorms who doesn't have a computer and ask if I can throw a computer in there on their cat5 drop in the dorm room
