Any ideas for cat-proofing a stove?

So my girlfriend and I woke up this morning to the sound of a heavy-duty fan and an odd clicking noise. I walked out of the bedroom to find one of the burners on the stove had been lit, which made the exhaust fan turn on automatically due to the heat.

The only possible explanation, since the knob had been physically turned, is that our kitten jumped up and turned the stove on by accident.

Anybody know a good way to keep the cat away from the control knobs? Do they sell something to do that, like a cover? Otherwise I'm considering jury-rigging something.

Anybody with (or even without) a cat have some advice?

Edit: I know one obvious answer is to keep the cat out of that room at night, but we're running out of rooms he's allowed to be in unsupervised.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Place cat in oven for 45 minutes.
Serve over chopped onions and cabbage.

I think that's the ticket right there. Thanks!

Well, I read the reviews on those knob covers, and people are saying they come off pretty easily. However, the reviews did remind me that I can just take the knobs off and leave them in a drawer until I need them. Thanks for your help.

Edit: Beat me to it TwiceOver.

It wasn't an accident... the kitty wants to KILL YOU!

We had to child-proof our cabinets because our kitten keep getting in them. I hope he doesn't do this next.

I've had a few "conversations" with my kittens about how the kitchen counter is the only off-limits place in the house, but cats don't learn the same way as dogs. The environment itself has to be unpleasant for them - spanking only teaches them to stay clear when you're there, and they jump right back up when you aren't around.

I'm thinking of getting one of these:
Motion-detector spray bottle

you have an evil cat. better keep an eye on that ah heck :)

Like was mentioned, i think the easiest way is to remove the knobs and place them in a drawer nearby.

One of ours used to open a cupboard, then climb up into the drawer above it. It was always a bit of a surprise when you opened the drawer to find a cat inside.

If you think cats are bad, try having a pet skunk. They are incredibly strong for their size, and will happily pull open the refrigerator door and help themselves to whatever they want.

I was going to suggest a flip-down cover that goes across the front of the stove where the knobs are. There are various welding shops within five miles of me that could whip out something made from sheet-aluminum in a few minutes.

They are illegal where I live right now, but a friend of mine in another state has skunks. I want to get one when I move.

Forgot to mention for the OP, be careful as the cat grows up. One of my sister's cats locked her out of her apartment. It grabbed the deadbolt with its front paws and turned it while trying to keep its grip, locking her out.
