Any ideas for broadband alternatives?

The new place can't handle a DSL line due to lack of facilities (i'm still within the range tho...) for some time. Cable is out of the question since it's an apartment complex that caters only one particular provider and they don't have internet services (yet).

IDSL or ISDN is the only option i can think of now but that's too expensive for the price you pay.

Any cheap alternatives? I was thinking fractional T1 or burstable T1 that will let me pay as i go (pay/use) but i'm not sure what kind of expenses i'll be looking at.

I used to have SDSL @ 768k and was paying $150 for it/mo and includes SLA's and IP's.

Comments, suggestions and thoughts are gladly appreciated.

Thanks :)

P.S. Seriously, no "dial-up is an alternative" posts please.

Bad thing is 2-way satellite is too expensive to start up. I can't afford the $500-700 for the equipment, nor is it economical to drop cable once you've made that kind of investment. 1-way satellite requires you use your phone line for the upstream. And 2-way satellite is still $70-80 a month. I've been looking into alternatives for awhile now since I can't get anything but IDSL in my area too but so far no good alternatives have arisen. (Can't get cable either until at least April or May).

If anyone knows of any reasonable alternatives (Wouldn't want to spend more than ~$150 a month) I would like to hear them too.

I know in my area, they have some 802.11b wireless access setup, but I don't think its available in my particular apartment complex.

If ISDN and satellite aren't viable, then you are basically out of luck.

Any kind of T1 line, fractional/burstable/etc., costs a pretty penny.

Cable and DSL are the cheap methods...everything else is much more expensive.

Thanks for the suggetions/comments.

I could try satellite but who else aside from DirectPC provides the service? $70-80 a month ain't so bad. I paid $150 on my SDSL line (with static IP's, SLA's and guaranteed bandwidth) before.

There's also wireless T1 but dang, they wanted to charge more than i could get a regular T1 for.

rootaxs,

Satellite per month cost isn't bad, its just the startup cost of purchasing a $700 satellite dish. Here's another provider of 2-way satellite Internet access: Starband ... DirectDuo is DirecTV's version of the 2-way satellite.

liqice,

i've checked out the link you provided. so far it looks promising. i'm starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel! thanks !:)

btw, would you know what the latency is on this thing? It would surely suck if speeds are good but latency is high.

Satellite broaband generally has a very high latency and thus us not good for gaming. For downloads and surfing and the like its just fine, but I would never use it to play online games. I think latency for satellite averages around 300-500ms versus the normal 30-150ms that a DSL or Cable connection would get... don't quote me on that though because I'm not 100% sure those numbers are correct. I do know that it is definitely a lot slower than DSL or Cable in terms of latency.

Satellite has high latency because the upstream is tied to the phone line and your data travels tens of thousands of miles from ground to satellite and back. The speed of light really isn't that fast, not when you want something sent 25000 miles as fast as possible. In a vacuum, it takes light 134ms just to cover that distance.

Are you being serious? Or is it you just don't have a clue what your talking about?
