Any idea why TX has the slogan "don't mess with texas"?

Seriously.
It's a strange land compared to So Cal. and every 1/4 mile, rather than a call box.... they have that lame-o sign - DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS -

Any thoughts? or facts?
just curious

It had something to do with people littering on the highway and all over the place. The state was getting really messy.
So they made the slogan Don't "mess" with Texas

According to the Daily Show anyway.

I thought it was because of the mexicans?
😕

It's to address littering. If a State Trooper catches you littering, you will go to jail. And you might get the fvck beat out of you. A few years ago the ad campaign for it was much stronger, with big name country music stars singing songs about not messing with Texas.

All I know about Texas is how to get there. You go East (Or West) until you smell it, then you go South until you step in it 😀

Well, the litter is the official reason, anyway.

It comes from an association with the cow dung, widespread throughout that cowboy country. The more you mess with it, the more it stinks.
