any idea why my media player looks like this?

Corruption.
Either your video card, drivers, or windows files are corrupt there.
First step is to reseat the vidcard, then begin testing things.
 
Whenever my desktop starts acting up like that a swift dusting of the innards takes care of it; heat is the enemy. I do believe it's your video card itself.
