Any idea why my laptop would go considerably slower on my network?

I currently have two systems in my house (both 802.11g);

Mac Mini w/ built in wifi
IBM T41 w/ Intel 2200bg

Today i upgraded my roadrunner from 5/384k to 10/1

On the Mini, running a speedtest, it varies, but i usually get between 7000-8500

On my T41, i cant get over 3000, usually closer to 2000.

Any ideas?

Try changing channels on the AP to 1, 6 or 11.

The only real difference i could imagine would be the wireless card.

Well try to normal stuff. Take the laptop to same room as AP.

What OS? You could try using the TCP/IP tweaks listed at DSL reports, they make a big difference. XP should perform pretty good.

Mac OS is much more efficient and faster network wise than MS.

<---not a mac fanboy, but they at least get the TCP/IP stack a lot better than MS ever has.

Update the Intel network drivers. I did this on my Gateway (which is a BRAND NEW model but came with drivers nearly 18 months out of date!) and I saw huge gains in speed, both in connection time and bandwidth... and this is on an 802.11b network!

(My drivers were Gateway branded ones, I switched them to the latest Intel generic ones, and despite their myriad warnings about potentially losing custom features, I actually ended up with *more* functionality afterwards).

Looks like its the 2200bg.... Its still horribly slow

Ive tried reinstalling the drivers (IBM & Intel), reseating the car & the antennas, nothing helped...

I ran out and picked up a Belkin PCMCIA 54g card, the laptop is 4x as fast now, speedtests show 8000+
