Any idea where I can find this cable?

Is it a standard 1/8" stereo plug on both ends, or is it a different plug on the headphone end?

I think it's just a "standard" cable soldered into the headphones. I would like to do this but depending on much the cable costs I might not bother. It might just be a cable with a fancy sleeve on it

I've done that with cat5, you could do it with any wire with 3 conductors and some jacks, heatshrink, and mesh sleeving.

Stranded if you want it flexible.

I should have drilled the RCA openings out a little more and put heatshrink on those twisted pair though.

You could cut the headphone wire and mount a jack in it's place to use a "patch cable" also.

Awesome! Where did you get the cable sleeving and the terminals from? I take it cat5 cable doesnt degrade audio quality?

Thanks

Ebay

I picked up 50 pair of RCA for $10 a while back.

And as for the sleaving, search "techflex" or "braided sleeving'. Sometimes you can get 500' for $10 or so.

As far as sound, I can't tell a difference.

EDIT: cheapest I see now per foot link

1/4" i what i used. if its cheap grab 1/8" also, could be useful for connections inside the jack. you should be able to find cheap 4' sections on ebay.

I know RCA is not really 75 ohm

http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/75ohmrca.htm

But I was wrong anyway - any impedance mismatch won't matter much for audio. However, Cat 5 isn't shielded and there is no reason not to use a shielded cable for an analog interconnect

You can get shielded cat5, it is not that common though. Lots of people also use Canare Star Quad which also is not shielded.

I have not picked up noise using either, but I've also never used them in a dirty RF environment. Even in my car i have no noise, but all my grounding is good and I think that is a big part.

I'm not sure if grounding one of each of the pairs in the cat 5 would do much in the way of shielding (and I don't think it even matters in an unbalanced system) but they could be connected to ground on one end and drained to the source RCA connector (that may do more to pick up noise acting like a antenna).

AFAIK Ethernet cables use LVDS which inherently rejects noise, like balanced XLR connections do, which means that they typically don't need shielding. Analog unbalanced lines (e.g. all RCA and all BNC connections) don't have the ability to reject noise so they need to be shielded a lot better, which is why good coax cables invariably have hefty shields - foil & braid compared to just foil for most shielded Cat5.

EDIT: I'm not saying Cat5 won't work, but why bother? It's just not the right thing to use.

So what kind of cable is it? Is it hardwired at the one end? If that's the HA-RX700 it is indeed hardwired.

EDIT: LOL what am I thinking, this isn't an interconnect, these are speaker cables. It doesn't really matter what you use. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.

So in interconnect connects a source to an amp right? Why does it not matter for speakers?

In home audio line level signals are usually in the milivolt range. Ingress to the signal can be just as high and will be amplified with the signal.

Speaker cables reject noise as they are of a higher voltage and have already been amplified.

I think any old stranded 24-28AWG two-conductor jacketed cable should do it. Just make sure you like the way it looks. (not a joke)

Also, the thicker the jacket, the more annoying it'll be.
