Looks like a temp folder. I have seen folders like that generated when I was created a new folder, but not yet renamed it, and then the process ended. The folder went away when the folder view was refreshed. Windows Home Server also uses folders with generated names such as that for creating folders for it's own use.

Folders like that are typically left behind by an installer/uninstaller. They use it for temp files and then don't clean it up.

Windows updates extract to them for installation and don't clean up after themselves. I'd be willing to bet that they're all on the drive with the most free space as well.

Assuming you're not having any problems/odd actions (i.e. that could be caused by a recent Windows Update) it's safe to delete them. You only need the update files if you're trying to uninstall the update. Boot into Safe Mode if you can't delete them when logged in as Admin.

The uninstall directories are those ones inside of the Windows directory that start with a $, the ones in the root of a volume are simply temporary files used during the installation AFAIK.

Yep, you're correct. I forgot about that...or got the two confused...or something like that. :hmm: He can still delete those "mystery folders" w/o a prob though.
