Any idea how it is that Earthlink DSL is available for me but Bellsouth (my provider for phone) DSL is not?

Earthlink just called saying that they see that I'm available for their service. However, Bellsouth DSL on my street is not. I get my phone through them and others in the area are (but I'm on a newish street so they've not expanded here), but I'm not with BS, but Earthlink I am...? Is it possible that earthlink is mistaken, or BS just hasn't gotten their act together?

Might be the type of DSL technolgoy available. Earthlink may be shooting you an IDSL or a an ADSL connection over a further distance that what Bellsouth can provide (no IDSL or ADSL service).

The sound company I work for used to get calls like that all the time. I would say "Sure, Sign us up" They would then ping the line and come back with a ... "We're sorry, Blah blah blah".
They do sales calls based on zip codes, not on actual service area coverage.
I think they are mistaken.
Earthlink was subbing service from other carriers here.
PacBell/SBC eventually got their act together, and voila, so did Earthstink. We went with SBC, btw.

OK I'm guessing that's the case then. I know she specifically said dsl and not ADSL or anything - although most consumers wouldn't care about the difference between the two anyway.

If that is the case, and they are mistaken, I can at least still get cable but it would be nice to have the two options.

Go to DSLReports.com and see which providers are available for you.
Earthlink just resells broadband service. :)

They are reselling Roadrunner at a better rate than Time Warner is providing me. I get tech support from Time Warner as well.
But I have an earthlink email address instead.

Also bellsouth is a lot more conserative. So if it is close they are more likely to say NO as to keep you from calling them and asking why it is not as fast. Earthlink just subs thorught the lines and like someone else said goes by zip and yu might not get actual speed or they will just say sorry.
